Description
Mina, also known as Mew Mina, is a character from the anime and manga series Tokyo Mew Mew. She is the Italian dub name for the character originally called Mint Aizawa in Japanese and Corina Bucksworth in the English adaptation. As the second Mew Mew to be introduced, Mina is a twelve-year-old girl from a wealthy family, the heiress of the Aizawa conglomerate. Her DNA is merged with that of a blue lorikeet, which grants her bird-like abilities when she transforms into her superhero form, Mew Mint.
Mina’s background is marked by a privileged but lonely upbringing. Her parents are almost never home, and her older brother, Seiji, is often occupied with business and studies. She lives in a large mansion largely under the care of her grandmother. Her primary companion is her beloved pet dog, Mickey. Before becoming a Mew Mew, she was used to a life of luxury and isolation, which shaped her initial personality.
In terms of personality, Mina initially comes across as mean, lazy, snobbish, and sarcastic. She is unaccustomed to common or ordinary things, preferring French food and scones, and she often refuses to participate in work at the Cafe Mew Mew, the team’s headquarters, where she drinks her afternoon tea instead. She is headstrong and can be dismissive of others, particularly the leader Ichigo Momomiya. However, beneath this exterior, she is empathetic and deeply cares about her friends. Her feelings are easily hurt, and her aloofness often masks her own loneliness and need for connection. One of the few people she openly admires is Zakuro Fujiwara, whom she idolizes almost obsessively.
Her motivations evolve throughout the series. At first, she is shocked by her transformation and accepts her role with guidance from Ichigo. Initially reluctant, she gradually comes to understand the importance of her mission and the value of her team. She is driven by a desire to protect what she holds dear, especially her dog Mickey and later her fellow Mew Mews. Her personal development is significant: she grows from a spoiled, solitary girl into a reliable fighter and a loyal friend who learns to value her relationships over material wealth.
Mina’s role in the story is that of a core member of the Tokyo Mew Mew team. As the second Mew Mew discovered by Ichigo, she helps battle the Chimera Animas, monsters created when alien parasites infect living hosts. She also participates in the fight against the aliens Quiche, Pie, Tart, and their leader Deep Blue. Her transformation is triggered by a pendant, and in her Mew form, she gains bird-like features such as wings and a tail, as well as enhanced agility and flight. Her signature attack is Ribbon Mint Echo, which manifests as a heart-shaped arrow or ribbon-based projectile.
Key relationships include her bond with Ichigo, who initially she treats with disdain but eventually comes to respect and care for as a friend. She is very protective of her dog Mickey, who is also the means through which she first encounters Ichigo. Her admiration for Zakuro is a prominent trait, and she is the one who realizes Zakuro is the fifth Mew Mew. She shares a complex dynamic with her brother Seiji, who appears in an episode and whose distant behavior both frustrates and motivates her.
Notable abilities include flight and aerial combat, thanks to her lorikeet DNA. She is a skilled ballet dancer, which she incorporates into her fighting style and transformation sequence. Her attacks focus on speed and precision, using her wings and magical ribbons. She is also capable of cooperating with her teammates to combine their powers, acting as a second-in-command in battle. Her character undergoes noticeable growth, moving from a self-centered heiress to a selfless heroine who values friendship and takes her responsibilities seriously.
