TV-Series
Description
Pai, sometimes romanized as Pie, is one of the three alien antagonists in the anime Tokyo Mew Mew. He belongs to a race descended from ancient humans who once built an advanced civilization on Earth but were forced to abandon it after a great environmental catastrophe. His people relocated to a harsh planet where, over generations, they adapted and developed psychic abilities. Pai arrives on Earth alongside his fellow alien Tart to support their companion Kish, and together they work to prepare the planet for the awakening of their leader, Deep Blue. Their immediate goal is to obtain a rare super-substance called Mew Aqua, which they plan to use to restore their own dying home world.
Pai is easily recognized by his short gray hair, purple eyes, and pointed elflike ears. Of the three aliens, he is the most serious and reserved. He rarely displays emotion, seldom smiles, and approaches his missions with a cold, analytical mindset. In battle, he treats his attacks almost like scientific experiments, calculating the mortality rate of each chimera anima he deploys and steadily escalating their danger. When his creations are defeated, he calmly notes that stronger tactics will be needed. His composed and calculating manner sets him apart from the more impulsive Kish and the playful Tart, and he is the most loyal of the trio to Deep Blue.
Pai's motivations are rooted in duty and devotion to his people. He believes that reclaiming Earth is necessary for the survival of his civilization, and his commitment to Deep Blue drives most of his actions. Despite his cold exterior, he is not portrayed as purely evil; his dedication stems from a genuine desire to save his home world. As the story progresses, his time on Earth begins to affect him. Toward the end of the anime, he gradually comes to understand the Mew Mews, in part because Lettuce persistently tries to convince him that fighting is unnecessary. This growing understanding leads him to sacrifice himself to aid the Mew Mews, and he smiles at them before doing so, a rare moment of genuine emotion from a character who usually hides his feelings.
After Deep Blue is defeated, Pai and the other aliens return to their world. Before they leave, Ryou gives Pai the remaining Mew Aqua, and Pai promises to use it to make their planet beautiful again, fulfilling the original hope behind his mission.
In terms of abilities, Pai possesses the same basic powers as his fellow aliens, including the ability to fly and to transport himself across distances. He fights primarily by creating and commanding chimera anima, monstrous creatures used as weapons against the Mew Mews, and he is also capable of physical combat. He has psychic powers inherited from his people's evolution, and in the anime he additionally wields a fan-shaped weapon that produces wind-based and thunder-based attacks. Over the course of the series, his fighting style proves highly effective, at times leaving the Mew Mews overwhelmed and defeated, while his calm intelligence makes him one of the more formidable and quietly threatening members of the alien group.
