TV-Series
Description
Lettuce Midorikawa, also known by her transformed identity Mew Lettuce, is a fictional character from the anime Tokyo Mew Mew. She is a thirteen-year-old girl who attends Okumura Daifuzoku Junior High School as a second-year student and works part-time at Café Mew Mew, the team's base of operations. Her name, Midorikawa, translates to green river, and her given name refers to the leafy vegetable. In some English adaptations, she is called Bridget Verdant.
Lettuce was born on April 29 and has a younger brother named Uri. Her parents, Yomogi and Eizaburou Midorikawa, are supportive and encouraging, often telling her to be herself and assuring her that she will make real friends one day. Before becoming a Mew Mew, Lettuce struggled with loneliness and was frequently bullied by a trio of classmates sometimes referred to as the Three Beckies. Despite this mistreatment, she continued to associate with them out of a desire for companionship. She found solace in making dolls as a pastime and is close to her family.
Lettuce's personality is defined by her deep shyness, timidity, and lack of self-confidence. She is a sweet-natured girl who is also clumsy and ditzy, often breaking plates while working at the café. She is extremely polite and speaks in a formal manner, even with her friends and family. She dislikes conflict and prefers to avoid fighting unless her friends are in danger. These traits often cause her to doubt her own abilities, especially when she first gains her powers.
Her motivation as a Mew Mew is not driven by a desire for glory or combat, but by a growing loyalty to her team and a wish to protect those she cares about. As the third member to join Tokyo Mew Mew, she was initially afraid of her powers and had difficulty controlling them. Encouragement from Ichigo Momomiya and Mint Aizawa helped her overcome this fear and begin to believe in herself. Over the course of the series, she gradually gains confidence and becomes more assertive, though she retains her gentle nature.
In the story, Lettuce serves as the quiet, empathetic heart of the team. Her role is not as a frontline fighter, but as a reliable support member whose abilities prove crucial in aquatic settings. She also provides emotional grounding for the group, often showing concern for others and offering a calming presence. Her personal journey revolves around overcoming her insecurity and learning to value her own strengths.
Lettuce's key relationships include her bond with Ichigo and Mint, who help her find her footing as a hero. She also develops a romantic crush on Ryou Shirogane, the leader of the Mew Project, which adds a personal layer to her involvement with the team. She remains close to her family, especially her brother Uri, and her parents' encouragement continues to influence her growth.
When transformed into Mew Lettuce, her hair becomes a lighter shade of green and she no longer wears glasses. She wears a green bodysuit with white lace trims, long white antenna-like extensions from her head, and a green choker with her Mew Pendant. Her Mew Mark, located on her chest, has a fish-like shape reflecting her animal DNA.
Lettuce's DNA is merged with that of a finless porpoise, a relative of the dolphin. This grants her enhanced swimming abilities and allows her to breathe underwater. When in contact with Mew Aqua, a special substance tied to the team's powers, her legs can transform into a porpoise tail, enabling her to move through water with great speed and agility. In combat, she wields a pair of weapons called Lettuce Castanets and performs attacks that involve creating high-pressure water blades, slicing through objects, and generating whirlpools. Her primary attack is named Reborn Lettuce Rush. Throughout the series, she learns to control her powers more precisely and gains the courage to use them in battle, marking her development from a fearful girl into a capable and dependable member of Tokyo Mew Mew.
