Description
Leti Bae, also known as Mew Lettuce, is one of the five members of Tokyo Mew Mew. Her civilian name is Lettuce Midorikawa, a thirteen year old second year junior high school student who attends Okumura Daifuzoku Junior High and works part time at Café Mew Mew. She is the third girl to join the team, having been accidentally infused with the DNA of a finless porpoise as part of the Mew Project. In her transformed state as Mew Lettuce, her hair shifts from dark green to a lighter shade, she loses her glasses, and she wears a green bodysuit with dolphin tail accents, a choker from which her Mew Pendant hangs, and long white antennae that reach her feet. Her Mew Mark is located on her chest and consists of two curves resembling a fish.
Before becoming a Mew Mew, Lettuce was a shy, timid, and extremely polite girl who always spoke formally, even to her family. She lacked self confidence due to being bullied by a group of girls at school, and she often felt socially isolated despite the constant encouragement of her parents, Yomogi and Eizaburou Midorikawa, and her younger brother Uri. She also had a hobby of making dolls. Her initial reaction to her new powers was fear and anxiety, causing them to go out of control until Ichigo Momomiya and Mint Aizawa helped calm her. Over the course of the story, Lettuce gradually blossoms from a bullied outcast into a more confident and capable heroine. Her motivation is primarily protective: she dislikes fighting but will not hesitate to defend her friends and the people she cares about. Her growing courage is tested when she develops a romantic crush on Ryou Shirogane, the leader of the Mew Project, and once uses a drop of Mew Aqua to transform her legs into a mermaid tail in order to save his life.
Lettuce's key relationships include her fellow Mew Mews, especially Ichigo and Mint, who were instrumental in encouraging her to accept her powers. She remains close to her supportive family and maintains a polite distance from her former bullies. Her role within the team is that of the quiet but determined member who proves that inner strength can overcome timidity. As Mew Lettuce, she wields the Combat Castanets, also called the Lettuce Castanets, and performs the attack Ribbon Lettuce Rush. Her finless porpoise DNA grants her exceptional swimming abilities, and when she has access to Mew Aqua, she can transform her legs into a porpoise tail underwater, greatly enhancing her mobility. Throughout the series, she learns to rely on her own abilities and becomes a steady and reliable member of Tokyo Mew Mew.
