Description
Deep Blue serves as the primary antagonist in Tokyo Mew Mew, a being whose existence is intrinsically linked to the human boy Masaya Aoyama. Years before the main events of the story, Deep Blue came to Earth and took refuge within the body of a human child, creating the Masaya personality that lives a normal life, largely unaware of the alien consciousness dormant within. This hidden identity allowed him to avoid detection. While Masaya is kind and gentle, Deep Blue embodies the opposite traits, emerging as a cold, cruel, and utterly ruthless entity.
Deep Blue's motivations are rooted in a deep-seated contempt for humanity and the destruction humans have caused to the Earth's environment. He shares this disgust with his host, Masaya, though Masaya lacks the memory and intent to act upon it. Deep Blue is the leader of the alien group seeking to reclaim the planet, and his underlings, including Kish, Pie, and Tart, work tirelessly to awaken him, believing he is the one who can save their own dying race. Unlike some interpretations where he is a savior for his people, his personal goal is often portrayed as the total annihilation of the human race, seeing their destruction as penance for the environmental damage they have caused.
The character's role is that of the ultimate threat the Tokyo Mew Mews must face. For most of the narrative, he is a mysterious and distant figure, appearing only as a voice or a shadow, guiding his minions from afar. His full and terrifying power is revealed near the climax of the story. When he finally awakens from within Masaya, he proves to be overwhelmingly more powerful than any other character, easily defeating multiple Mew Mews and showing no hesitation in attempting to kill Ichigo Momomiya, the girl Masaya loves. The central conflict thus becomes a desperate struggle to stop this immense power without destroying the innocent Masaya along with him.
Key relationships define Deep Blue's impact on the story. His most critical connection is with Ichigo Momomiya, the lead Mew Mew. While Masaya shares a deep romantic bond with her, Deep Blue is completely unaffected by her, attacking her without remorse. His relationship with his own followers is not one of loyalty but of cold utility. He is their leader, but he shows no hesitation in killing Kish, one of his most devoted servants, when he is challenged or stands in his way. This act of cruelty is a pivotal moment that demonstrates his complete lack of empathy and helps trigger Masaya's consciousness to fight back from within.
Throughout the story, Deep Blue remains a static character until his final defeat. He does not develop or change; his only transformation is from a dormant entity to an active, destructive force. The development that occurs is tied to Masaya, whose willpower grows strong enough to challenge Deep Blue's control from inside their shared body. In the manga, this internal battle leads Masaya to fatally stab himself with Deep Blue's own sword, releasing the Mew Aqua, a powerful substance that destroys the alien leader and heals the damage caused. In the anime adaptation, the conclusion is slightly different, with Ichigo delivering the final blow that destroys Deep Blue, but only after Masaya's consciousness intervenes and holds him back.
Deep Blue possesses a range of notable abilities that mark him as a supreme threat. He wields the same sword as the heroic Blue Knight, which is fitting given they are two sides of the same coin. He can fire powerful blasts of blue lightning or fire energy from his hands, and an attack like the "Song of Oblivion" is suggested to have the capacity to destroy an entire planet. He is also capable of flight, teleportation, and creating energy barriers or orbs that can trap his enemies. His physical transformation is striking; when he emerges, he takes on Masaya's form but with very pale, almost white skin and long, flowing black hair that reaches his feet, along with distinctively long, pointed ears.
