Description
Pie, also romanized as Pai in some translations, is one of the main alien antagonists in Tokyo Mew Mew, appearing in both the original manga and the anime adaptation. He belongs to a trio of aliens who arrive on Earth alongside Quiche and Tart to prepare the planet for the arrival of their leader, Deep Blue. The aliens are descendants of beings who originally lived on Earth millions of years ago but were forced to leave after environmental disasters threatened their survival. They regard humanity as responsible for the planet's deteriorating condition and believe they are justified in reclaiming Earth for their own kind, which places them in direct conflict with the Mew Mews.
In terms of personality, Pie is the most serious and disciplined member of the alien group. He rarely displays emotion and seldom smiles, even when taunting his opponents or after Deep Blue's awakening. He is calm, rational, and analytical, approaching his missions with a scientific mindset. During battles he is known to calculate mortality rates and treat his encounters as experiments, carefully escalating the danger posed by each creature he sends. He follows rules and procedures strictly, which sometimes brings him into conflict with the more impulsive and spontaneous Quiche. His loyalty to Deep Blue is unwavering, and he rarely jokes or deviates from his objectives.
Pie's motivations are rooted in his devotion to Deep Blue and his commitment to the aliens' shared mission of restoring their home world. He serves as a key lieutenant in the invasion effort, specializing in intelligence gathering, data analysis, and strategic planning. While Quiche often takes the most visible role in early skirmishes, Pie works as the strategic backbone of the group, using his research and tactical thinking to support the campaign. His methods include transforming local animals into monstrous creatures called Chimera Anima, which are used to spread chaos and drain the planet's energy.
Within the story, Pie plays a significant role as one of the primary threats the Mew Mews must overcome. He supports the alien invasion both through direct combat and through behind-the-scenes preparation for Deep Blue's arrival. His cold and calculating presence adds tension to the narrative, forcing the heroes to adapt to increasingly dangerous challenges. He is considered the most loyal of the three aliens to their leader and appears to be the eldest of the trio, though no official ages are confirmed.
Pie's key relationships shape much of his character arc. He works closely with Quiche and Tart, with Quiche's spontaneous behavior frequently testing his patience. His bond with Lettuce, one of the Mew Mews, is particularly important to his development. Near the end of the anime adaptation, Lettuce tries to convince him that fighting is unnecessary, and Pie gradually comes to understand the Mew Mews' perspective. This growing understanding leads him to make a significant choice: he sacrifices himself to help the Mew Mews, smiling at them as he does so. After Deep Blue is defeated, Pie survives and returns to his own world with the other aliens. He is given the remaining Mew Aqua by Ryo, the Mew Mews' mentor, and promises to use it to restore beauty to his home planet.
His notable abilities are shared in part with the other aliens. Pie can fly, teleport, transport himself across distances, and create dimensional portals. His primary combat method involves creating Chimera Anima and using physical attacks. In the anime, he also wields a large fan as a weapon, which allows him to generate powerful wind, thunder, and ice-based attacks. His intellectual abilities are equally significant, as his analytical mind and talent for data analysis make him a formidable strategist. Over the course of the series, Pie develops from a rigid and detached antagonist into a character capable of empathy and self-sacrifice, ultimately contributing to the restoration of his own world rather than its continued conquest.
