Description
Kyoji Mujo is introduced as a nineteen-year-old agent sent from the Mainland to serve as its representative in the Lost Ground following the area's second chaotic upheaval. From the outset, however, he is less a loyal official and more a figure consumed by an insatiable hunger for power, driven by an unshakable sense of his own superiority. His entire existence revolves around a concept he calls the Other Side, a parallel Alter dimension that he believes contains limitless strength, and he will use any means necessary to reach it.
His personality is cold, calculating, and utterly ruthless. Mujo displays no genuine concern for life, treating both allies and enemies as disposable tools. He manipulates the organization HOLY from within, orchestrating sinister deeds behind the scenes while presenting a composed and controlled facade. He is often described as a madman, not because he is chaotic, but because his single-minded obsession overrides any moral restraint. He watches the battles between Kazuma and Ryuho with eager anticipation, regarding them as chosen ones whose clash can tear open the gateway to the Other Side.
Mujo's primary motivation is to absorb all Alter power and become the ultimate being. He initially positions himself as a figure of authority, but his greed soon leads him to defect, casting aside his assigned role and becoming an independent renegade. As the de facto head of the Lost Ground government, he seizes control and orchestrates events to provoke the dimensional rift he craves. The moment he absorbs the entity known as Crystal from the Other Side, his delusions of grandeur swell, and he physically transforms into a monstrous form, finally certain that his thirst for power has been satisfied.
His key relationships are purely antagonistic. He has no true allies and uses HOLY agents as unwitting pawns. His most significant interactions are with Kazuma and Ryuho, the two protagonists. He views them not as rivals but as catalysts for his own ascension, and his manipulations bring him into direct conflict with both. Where others might see adversaries, Mujo sees only stepping stones toward the power of the Alter dimension.
Over the course of the story, Mujo journeys from a seemingly composed Mainland envoy to a power-mad, self-styled overlord. His development is a downward spiral of escalating ambition. Once he seizes the reins of the Lost Ground and absorbs Crystal, his greed becomes his undoing; the protagonists ultimately defeat him, his immense power unable to compensate for the fragility of his obsession.
His notable abilities center on his unique Alter power, Absorption, which allows him to steal and assimilate the Alter abilities of other users, growing stronger with each victim. He can drain Alter energy through his hands or even his breath, and he can form protective shields out of raw Alter power. Mujo also wields a rare duo-Alter called Black Joker and White Fist, which manifests as one arm cloaked in black and the other in white, granting him techniques that include powerful electric shocks and high-speed drilling attacks. After absorbing Crystal's energy, he gains further powers, such as generating a paralyzing electric field, firing electric bolts, and controlling electronic systems. He can also open and traverse portals to the Alter dimension at will, reflecting his deep connection to the Other Side he so obsessively pursues.
