Description
Kunihiko Kimishima, also referred to as Jonhyeong, is a seventeen-year-old native of the Lost Ground and the closest friend and business partner of the protagonist Kazuma. Having no family of his own, Kimishima forms a bond with Kazuma that approaches brotherhood, with Kazuma’s only other attachment being the young girl Kanami. He is characterized by a certain pompousness and a willingness to remain willfully ignorant of certain uncomfortable truths, yet he takes his work with utmost seriousness. His primary role is that of a fixer and information broker: he uses an array of connections to locate mercenary jobs that require an alter user, then presents those opportunities to Kazuma, who serves as the muscle. Kimishima respects Kazuma’s privacy by never disclosing the violent specifics of these jobs to Kanami in his presence.
Personality-wise, Kimishima is equal parts enterprising and loyal. He displays a genuine fondness for Kanami, always offering her kind words, and he nurses an unspoken crush on Ayase Terada, a fellow member of their extended circle. A recurring quirk is his fascination with vehicles, particularly rough-built cars and buggies, which he takes pride in showing off, only for them to be consistently destroyed, often inadvertently through Kazuma’s alter powers or by enemy alter users. Despite lacking any alter ability himself, he repeatedly puts himself in perilous situations out of loyalty. This is starkly illustrated when he and Kanami are captured by HOLD to bait Kazuma. Kimishima fights back, steals a vehicle, and drives Kanami to safety, all while concealing a gunshot wound. He continues to assist Kazuma until he collapses from blood loss, dying soon after they reunite with Kanami. His death becomes a catalytic trauma that sends Kazuma into a rage-fueled rampage against HOLY and deepens the series’ conflict.
In the manga continuity, Kimishima survives these events and eventually marries Ayase Terada, offering an alternate fate. Across both versions his defining traits remain constant: he is resourceful, fiercely devoted, and serves as the emotional anchor and logistical backbone for Kazuma’s mercenary life, all while navigating the dangerous world of the Lost Ground without any supernatural power.
