Peony, known as Botan, is a spirit guide from the Spirit World who appears in the anime film Yu Yu Hakusho The Movie: Poltergeist Report. Her Japanese name, Botan, means the peony flower. She is a cheerful and unconventional ferry girl whose usual duty is to guide the souls of the deceased across the Sanzu River, the Spirit World equivalent of the River Styx, so they can face judgment. In the film, she is entrusted by Koenma, the ruler of the Spirit World, with a mysterious sealed item meant for Yusuke Urameshi, the Spirit Detective. While trying to deliver it, she is caught in the upheaval caused by the invading forces of the Netherworld and is badly injured. Before losing consciousness, she manages to hide the item, and she is later discovered by Yusuke and his friends, who take her and her young companion Hinageshi to Genkai's temple for care.

In terms of personality, Botan is bright, upbeat, and given to lighthearted or mildly sarcastic remarks, which makes her an atypical presence compared with the grim duties usually associated with a death god. While she is not a frontline fighter in the style of Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, or Hiei, she can defend herself when needed, typically using her oar or whatever blunt object is available, and she has a degree of healing ability that can slow or halt demonic transformation. In this film, she represents the compassionate and supportive side of the Spirit World, and the item she hides proves central to the resolution of the conflict.
