Description
Lord Granion is a character from the anime film Slayers Great, where he serves as one of the primary antagonistic figures. His role is that of a feudal lord in a city known as Stoner, which is notable for its production of powerful golems. Granion is depicted as a man with a selfish and ambitious personality, primarily concerned with his own status and power. His physical appearance is distinctive, featuring blue hair cut to the neck, black eyes, and notable traits such as cheek curls, sideburns, a hat, makeup, and lipstick, reflecting his status and perhaps a vain or theatrical nature.
Granions central motivation in the story is the acquisition of greater power and dominion. He is one of two rival lords, the other being Lord Heissen, who both seek to control the city of Stoner and ultimately use its resources to build an army for conquering the entire world. To this end, Granion and Heissen instigate a contest involving the construction of massive golems, intending to use the results to determine the sole ruler of the city. This contest is, however, a disguised step in their larger, more sinister plan for military conquest. Granion sponsors the golem builder Galia Einburg, commissioning him to create a giant golem in the image of the sorceress Lina Inverse to serve as a powerful weapon. His secret scheme involves using these golems as prototypes for a larger army.
In the narrative, Granions key relationship is with his rival, Lord Heissen, as the two are locked in a power struggle for control. He also has a significant, though purely transactional, relationship with the golem creator Galia Einburg, whom he employs to build his weapon. Granion is frequently accompanied by an assistant, referred to simply as Granions Aid, who carries out his orders. The rivalry between Granion and Heissen is a direct catalyst for the films central conflict, as it pits their respective golem-builders against each other.
Throughout the course of the story, Granions development is negative, following a typical trajectory for a comedic antagonist. His carefully laid plans for conquest are ultimately thwarted by the very sorceresses whose images were used for his golems. Lina Inverse and Naga the Serpent, having been trapped inside the giant constructs as power sources, escape and use their formidable magical abilities to destroy the golems. In the ensuing chaos, the city is significantly damaged. As a direct consequence of his failed scheme, Granion is stripped of his lordship and punished by being demoted to a common guard, a humiliating end that underscores the films comedic tone.
As for notable abilities, Lord Granion does not himself demonstrate any significant magical or combative prowess within the story. Instead, his power and influence come entirely from his political position as a feudal lord and his ability to manipulate and commission others, particularly golem makers, to do his bidding. His authority and wealth are his primary tools, and his role is that of a planner and instigator rather than a direct fighter.
