Description
Filia Ul Copt is a golden dragon and formerly served as a priestess of the Flarelord, the Fire Dragon King. She is approximately 300 years old, which is considered very young for a dragon, as her kind can live for over two thousand years. In her standard humanoid form, she stands about 165 centimeters tall. As a member of the golden dragon race, Filia has the ability to transform between her humanoid appearance and her true, much larger draconic form. She is uncomfortable transforming in front of others because the process requires her to shed her clothing. Furthermore, her mastery of this transformation is incomplete; when she becomes excited or angry, her dragon tail tends to appear involuntarily, often with a ribbon tied around it.
Despite her outward appearance of a composed and ladylike young woman, Filia possesses a fierce and passionate personality. She has a notoriously short temper that rivals that of her companion, Lina Inverse, and is prone to violent outbursts, often using a massive, spiked mace she carries as her primary weapon. Raised in the sheltered environment of the Flarelord's temple, she is initially quite naive and holds a rigid, idealized view of the world as taught to her by her elders. This upbringing made her somewhat arrogant and condescending toward others whose beliefs differed from her own. However, beneath this surface, Filia has a gentle and kind heart. She is easily excited by her hobbies, which include collecting antique pottery and drinking tea, sometimes using the latter as a way to escape from stressful situations.
Filia's primary motivation is to follow the divine oracle of the Flarelord to find a powerful sorcerer capable of preventing the imminent threat of the dark lord Dark Star from destroying her world. Initially seeking out Lina's older sister, Luna, for this task, she is instead directed to Lina and joins her party on a journey to the Flarelord's temple. As the story progresses, her role shifts from simply following orders to a personal quest for truth. Upon encountering the antagonist Valgarv, who accuses her race of slaughtering his people, the Ancient Dragons, Filia's beliefs are fundamentally challenged. She disobeys her temple's elders to uncover the truth, leading her to the devastating realization that her own kind committed genocide out of fear of the Ancient Dragons' power. This revelation shatters her worldview and becomes the central conflict of her character, moving her from a place of naive faith to one of moral responsibility and a desire for atonement.
Throughout this journey, Filia forms several key relationships. She becomes closest to Lina Inverse, who acts as a mentor and a foil, pushing Filia to take action instead of wallowing in guilt. The two share a strong friendship, though Filia is often exasperated by Lina's reckless and greedy nature. She shares a more subtle, mutual respect with Zelgadiss Graywords, who appreciates her more refined sensibilities. Her most complex relationship is with the enigmatic priest Xelloss, a monster whom her race despises. Filia possesses an innate, physical ability to sense monsters, and she openly loathes Xelloss, frequently calling him names and threatening him. Despite this mutual antagonism, they develop a begrudging respect for one another, ultimately fighting side-by-side against a greater threat. She also feels a deep, sympathetic bond with Valgarv, the ancient dragon antagonist. Rather than hatred, she feels guilt and compassion for his suffering, which fuels her desire to save him and atone for her people's sins.
Filia undergoes significant development, maturing from a sheltered, dogmatic priestess into an independent and morally courageous individual. Her journey is one of disillusionment and growth, as she learns to question authority, accept the dark history of her own people, and form her own convictions. In a pivotal moment, she voluntarily resigns as a Flarelord priestess, unable to continue representing an institution she no longer sees as infallible. In the final battle against Dark Star, she overcomes her hesitation and accepts the painful necessity of fighting Valgarv to save the world, acting not out of dogma but out of a personal choice to take responsibility. After the conflict, she atones for her race's past by opening an antique shop in a human town and adopting the reborn Valgarv, now in the form of an egg, along with his two former subordinates, Jillas and Gravos, to raise as her new family.
Filia possesses notable abilities that make her a formidable ally. As a dragon, she retains immense physical strength, even in her humanoid form, which allows her to wield her heavy, spiked mace with ease. She is also skilled in the use of holy magic, a branch of powerful, sacred spells that were mostly lost in the world where Lina and her companions live. Her magical repertoire includes potent offensive white magic, such as the Chaotic Disintegrate spell. Beyond combat, she can use magic to teleport herself and others over long distances. Her draconic nature also grants her a high degree of endurance and an innate sensitivity to monsters, allowing her to sense their presence even when they are hidden.
