Description
Hibiki Amawa is the central protagonist of this story. He is a young man of twenty-three years who has recently graduated from college with a certificate in athletics and holds a deep-seated dream of becoming a professional teacher. However, his path is immediately blocked by the policies of the local Seito Sannomiya Private School, which has a strict policy of hiring only women. After being summarily denied employment on the basis of his gender, Hibiki is offended but remains determined to prove the merits of his educational philosophy.
Forced to confront the practical issue of paying his rent to his landlady, Lulu Sanjo, Hibiki agrees to a drastic solution: disguising himself as a woman to infiltrate the school’s faculty. With the help of practical gadgets engineered by Lulu, he creates a convincing female persona. This decision sets the stage for his entire journey, forcing him to navigate the professional world under a false identity while trying to remain true to his calling as an educator.
Hibiki is defined by his enthusiasm, optimism, and a genuine, almost earnest dedication to his students. He is not a cynical character; rather, he approaches his teaching job with a fire and sincerity that surprises those around him. His primary goal is not just to teach athletics, but to help the young people in his charge realize their full potential. He wants to be an inspiring mentor, and he consistently behaves honourably, never exploiting his position or the trust placed in him for any personal or perverse gain. His personality is one of resilience, as he constantly manages the stress of maintaining his disguise while dealing with the typical conflicts of a middle school classroom, including interpersonal fights and student anxieties.
His primary role in the story is as a physical education teacher at the school. However, his function quickly expands beyond that of a simple instructor. He becomes a mediator and a guide for his students, particularly for a shy and well-meaning girl named Fuko Kuzuha. Hibiki’s situation creates a complex web of relationships, the most significant of which is with Fuko, who develops romantic feelings for her new teacher, unaware of Hibiki’s true gender. This places Hibiki in an extremely difficult ethical position, as he knows that any reciprocation is impossible due to both his position as her teacher and the secret of his identity. His relationship with Lulu Sanjo is one of a desperate tenant and a bizarrely helpful landlady; she is the sole keeper of his secret and the architect of his disguise.
Throughout the narrative, Hibiki undergoes significant development as he confronts the contradictions of his situation. What begins as a desperate act to secure a job evolves into a personal crusade against the school’s discriminatory hiring practices. He seeks to prove that a teacher’s quality is not determined by gender. As the story progresses, the psychological toll and the moral implications of his deception become heavier, especially as he gets closer to his students. The story pushes him to the brink of being discovered, forcing him to confront what he is willing to sacrifice for his ideals and his career. The experience fundamentally changes him, transforming a simple job search into a profound lesson about identity and integrity.
As a professional, Hibiki’s notable abilities lie in his athleticism and his teaching method. He holds a certificate in athletics and uses his genuine expertise in physical education to connect with his students. His disguise is maintained with the help of various gadgets, suggesting an ability to adapt and perform under pressure. However, his most important abilities are not physical but pedagogical: he has a talent for listening, mediating conflicts, and inspiring his students through his own example of hard work and determination.
