TV-Series
Description
Jim Hawking is an eleven-year-old boy who serves as the business partner and pragmatic sidekick to Gene Starwind, together operating a small odd-jobs business on the backwater planet of Sentinel III. Often referred to by his full first name, James, Jim is a child prodigy whose prodigious talents belie his young age. He is the son of a legendary computer hacker known only as the Computer Wizard, a heritage that foreshadows his own extraordinary aptitude for technology.

In personality, Jim acts as the precise opposite of his partner, Gene. Where Gene is reckless, impulsive, and prone to dreaming of easy riches, Jim is responsible, cautious, and perpetually concerned with the practicalities of their shared life, such as finances and planning. He is the constant and often irritated voice of reason, preferring to earn money through legitimate hard work rather than risky ventures, and he frequently criticizes Gene for his lecherous behavior and lack of foresight. Despite being a child who is often treated as such by the world, Jim acts with the maturity of an adult, creating an interesting dynamic with crew members like Aisha Clan-Clan, who is an adult but behaves childishly.

Jim's primary motivation is intrinsically linked to the success and survival of the Outlaw Star's crew. His logical mind drives him to ensure their operations run smoothly, from managing the ship's maintenance to securing their next legitimate job. He demonstrates a strong sense of loyalty to Gene and the others, taking his responsibilities seriously and working to protect them from threats, both technological and personal. This is reflected in his role as the crew's strategist, cyber-security expert, and the one who often has to clean up the messes left in Gene's wake.

Within the story, Jim occupies the crucial role of the team's technical genius and hacker, handling everything from infiltrating secure networks to repairing complex starship systems. He is one of the first two members of the crew, alongside Gene, and his skills are immediately essential when they acquire their titular ship, the Outlaw Star, and its bio-android navigator, Melfina. He forms key relationships with each member of the crew. He looks up to Melfina, the gentle and kind android, viewing her as a mother figure and often needing to protect her from Gene's unwanted advances. Conversely, he enjoys a friendship with the boisterous Ctarl-Ctarl warrior Aisha Clan-Clan, their opposing personalities creating a complementary bond. He also gets along well with the ship's artificial intelligence, Gilliam II, and even customizes one of Gilliam's maintenance robots, turning it pink with silly eyebrows to serve as his personal mobile link to the ship's computer. He is initially distrustful of strangers, a caution born from being deceived by the outlaw Hilda, and has difficulty trusting enigmatic figures like the assassin Suzuka until they prove themselves.

Throughout the series, Jim undergoes a subtle but significant development, primarily marked by his forced transition from a child running a small business to a key member of a fugitive starship crew. He is often thrust into dangerous situations far beyond his years, and he rises to meet them with composure. One notable episode focuses on his first experience with young love, a girl named Hanmyo who is later revealed to be an enemy combat pilot sent to destroy the Outlaw Star, an incident that adds a layer of emotional complexity to his youth.

Jim possesses a formidable array of abilities that make him indispensable. His foremost talent is as a computer hacker, allowing him to slice through galactic information networks and security systems with ease. He is also a gifted mechanic and engineer, capable of repairing and maintaining the highly advanced systems of the Outlaw Star, troubleshooting engine failures, and even crafting new devices from spare parts. He is proficient with firearms, often carrying a pistol for self-defense, and is also capable of piloting the Outlaw Star when necessary. Beyond his technical skills, his strategic mind and logical planning are his greatest assets in a fight, always seeking to outthink opponents rather than overwhelm them with force.
