TV-Series
Description
Neju Na Melmas is a character who appears in the second half of the series. Outwardly she resembles a young girl around ten years of age, but she is in fact over two thousand years old. Her youthful appearance is a result of her aging having been chemically halted to preserve her holiness during her long tenure as the high priestess and spiritual leader of the planet Melmas. After stepping down from that role, her aging is restored to normal.
Neju is exceptionally intelligent and politically shrewd, having survived numerous assassination attempts during her time as high priestess by employing body doubles and her own formidable psionic powers. She possesses extraordinarily strong telepathic abilities, including the capacity to affect the movement of others, induce partial paralysis, and even create the illusion of stopping time from the perspective of her target. Despite her age and experience, she often behaves in a manner consistent with her physical appearance, showing curiosity, playfulness, and a fondness for spending time with Seina Yamada, the series protagonist. This childlike demeanor belies a cunning and observant nature.
Her primary motivation at the time of her introduction is to select a successor and transition to a secular life, a process that requires her to leave Melmas for five years. To ensure her safety from enemies she made during her priesthood, she is enrolled as a student at the Galaxy Police Academy. She first encounters Seina and his crew on the planet Jurai, shortly after Seina learns that his original ship, the Kamidake, has been destroyed. Seto Kamiki Jurai arranges for Seina, along with Kiriko Masaki, Amane Kaunaq, and Ryoko Balta, to escort Neju to the Academy aboard their new ship, the Kamidake II, with strict orders not to use their weapons.
From the beginning, Neju attaches herself closely to Seina, often staying near him and seeking his attention, which creates jealousy among the other female crew members. Her true identity is discovered when Kiriko notices a golden necklace around her neck that marks her as the high priestess. When confronted, Neju demonstrates her power by partially paralyzing the three women, asserting her authority. Despite this, she also shows a caring side, comforting the newborn cabbit Fuku during a pirate attack that is later revealed to be an assassination attempt against her. After arriving at the Academy, Seto explains that the pirates were likely targeting Neju because she is about to choose her successor.
Later, Neju uses a body double to secretly travel to Earth and observe Seina's life at his family home. She helps the other girls work at the Yamada family's new supermarket while Seina visits Tenchi Masaki. When the Daluma Guild launches a fleet targeting Seina, the group is forced to leave Earth in haste. Over time, like the other women close to Seina, Neju becomes engaged to him in a political marriage following the defeat of a rogue faction of the Galaxy Army. She eventually becomes one of Seina's eight wives and continues to serve as a crew member of the Kamidake II.
Neju's relationships are defined by her deep attachment to Seina, whom she openly wishes to marry once she grows older. Her bond with the other female crew members evolves from tension to cooperation, as they come to accept her presence. She also develops a protective affection for Fuku, the cabbit. Her development shifts from a figure of immense age and authority who must hide her true nature to someone who can enjoy a more normal life among Seina's circle, embracing both her childlike side and her powerful abilities. Noteworthy abilities include her telepathy, mind control, partial paralysis, and the capacity to affect perceptions of time, making her a formidable psychic despite her small stature.
