Description
Gaula, also known as Goula, is a character from the anime and manga series Zenki. He serves as one of the primary disciples and henchmen of Karuma, the queen of darkness, placing him among the main antagonistic forces alongside his fellow servants, Gulen and Anju.
In terms of physical appearance, Gaula is depicted as an elderly man. He has a weathered face adorned with a long, white beard and a matching mustache. His attire is distinct and elaborate; he wears a blue turban decorated with gold details and a prominent red gem at its center. A flowing blue tunic covers most of his body, which is complemented by horn-shaped golden shoulder pads. His outfit also features black, tattered cloth pieces connected by a golden chain, with red accents in the middle of the garment.
Gaula is characterized by a quiet and reserved personality. He is a man of few words, but when he does speak, his comments are often directed at his ally Gulen, whom he enjoys taunting. He frequently dismisses Gulen as being an inexperienced young man, highlighting a sense of superiority derived from his own age and presumably greater tenure as a servant of darkness.
His role in the story is to act as a recurring obstacle for the protagonists, which include the guardian warrior Zenki and the young enchantress Chiaki. Gaula and his fellow disciples consider the heroes to be major impediments to the dark plans of their master, Karuma. He participates in various schemes to eliminate or control the guardian warrior. A significant part of his narrative arc involves a betrayal. Driven by a desire to defeat his own master, Karuma, Gaula feigns helping the heroes to lure them into a trap. He claims to know a spell that can restore Zenki’s energy, but his true intention is to gain control over the powerful guardian warrior to use him as a weapon against Karuma. This plan ultimately fails, leading to his demise; he is stabbed by a returning Gulen and is subsequently absorbed by Karuma herself.
The key relationships that define Gaula are primarily with his dark comrades and his master. His dynamic with Gulen is notably antagonistic, marked by his constant mockery of the younger man. Despite being on the same side, there is a clear rivalry and lack of trust between them, as Gaula also reveals his treacherous nature by attempting to use the heroes for his own ambition to usurp Karuma. This act of betrayal is his defining moment of development, shifting from a seemingly loyal, if cantankerous, servant to an ambitious schemer whose overreach leads to his destruction.
Gaula possesses a variety of supernatural abilities consistent with a high-ranking servant of darkness. He is capable of teleportation and flight. He can also transform a being possessed by a Seed of Evil into a monstrous beast. His powers extend to elemental control, as he can summon the spirits of trees and water. He is also able to create a powerful force field and, on at least one occasion, has demonstrated the ability to change his own clothing instantaneously. His magical knowledge is extensive enough to claim he knows a conjuration to restore Zenki’s energy, though this was a ruse as part of his treacherous scheme.
