Description
Karuma is a primary antagonist in the Kishin Douji Zenki series, serving as the central figure of the Karuma arc. She is a powerful sorceress, typically appearing in a human-like form characterized by her green hair, black eyes, and attire consisting of a priest's robe, a hat, and a necklace.
Karuma possesses a cold, calculating, and arrogant personality. She habitually refers to herself in the third person and looks down on others. While she calls her three loyal servantsGuren, Goura, and Anjuher children, she generally treats them as disposable tools. Whenever a servant disagrees with her, she does not hesitate to brainwash them and forcibly erase their memories, a process that causes them great anguish. Despite this general lack of empathy, she displays a notable exception for Guren, her most faithful servant. She is genuinely fond of him, and when Guren is killed, she uses her powers to revive him, a special treatment she never extends to her other servants who are simply forgotten once they are gone.
Karuma's primary motivation is to spread a terrible influence across the world using the Fruits of Possession, which corrupt people by granting their desires at the cost of turning them into horrible monsters called Possession Beasts. Her ultimate goal is to create a world filled with violence, sin, and dread. Her actions are also driven by a deep-seated fear. She secretly fears the combined power of the Demon Gods Zenki and Goki, who defeated her 1,300 years prior. Consequently, she attempts to kill the descendants of Goki to prevent the two demon gods from ever joining forces against her again.
In the story, Karuma is the master of the Hyouinomi (Fruits of Possession) and commands her three servants from a dimension of her own making. She is the major obstacle that the protagonists must overcome. A key aspect of her role is that her human form is not her true self but a sealed form, similar to Zenki's small child-like state. When the seal that binds her is broken, she returns to her true, far more powerful form, which manifests as a gigantic tree. In the anime, after the seal is weakened, she merges with this tree form, causing her skin to turn a light purple shade, and she uses her full strength to devastate the surrounding area and turn villagers into a zombie-like state.
Karuma is a skilled and potent magician. Her primary ability is the creation of the Fruits of Possession. Even in her sealed form, which is much weaker than her true self, she retains considerable power. She can erase the memories of victims, brainwash her servants, and control them remotely from a distance. Her influence can be extremely long-lasting; in the manga continuity, although Karuma herself was defeated long ago and does not personally appear, her seeds continue to exist and wreak havoc on the world by feeding on human desires.
