Description
Derek Wildstar is the central protagonist of the classic anime series Star Blazers, known in Japan as Susumu Kodai. A young man defined by profound personal tragedy, he serves as the tactical commander of the space battleship Argo and operates as a skilled fighter pilot, often leading his squadron into combat.
His background is steeped in loss. As a child, Derek lost his parents when the alien Gamilon forces launched a devastating planetary bombardment on Earth. This event forged a deep-seated anger and a burning desire for revenge. His resolve to fight was further hardened when his older brother, Alex Wildstar, was seemingly killed in a battle over Pluto while serving under Captain Avatar of the Earth Defense Force. Initially, Derek holds Captain Avatar personally responsible for his brother’s death, an accusation that fuels a hot-headed and impulsive personality. He clashes with authority and is driven by a need to confront the enemy, unable to believe that beings who look almost human could commit such atrocities.
Derek's primary motivation evolves throughout the series from simple vengeance to a broader sense of duty and the protection of humanity. His initial assignment to the Argo for its desperate mission to Iscandar places him on the front line of Earth's last hope. Over the course of this voyage, his character undergoes significant development. The responsibility of his role as battle chief and acting captain, especially as the aging Captain Avatar’s health fails, forces him to mature. He learns to temper his rashness and moves beyond his personal grudge against Avatar, eventually reconciling with the captain and adopting his more strategic and principled approach to leadership. A pivotal moment occurs when the crew captures a Gamilon pilot; Derek, though enraged, ultimately chooses not to kill the helpless prisoner, realizing that the enemy is not so different from himself. By the final battles, he concludes there are more important things than fighting, a philosophy that guides his later command decisions.
In his role on the Argo, Derek serves as the tactical commander and is a frontline pilot. He is often in the thick of combat, piloting his Cosmo Zero fighter. He eventually becomes the acting captain and later holds the formal rank of captain, leading the Argo against new threats such as the Comet Empire and navigating complex interstellar conflicts.
Key relationships shape his journey. His romance with Nova Forrester, the ship's radar operator and nurse, provides a personal anchor and a stabilizing influence throughout the many conflicts. His friendship with fellow officer Mark Venture is another significant bond, and his leadership is supported by the ship's navigator and other crew members. The revelation that his brother Alex survived and is living on a distant planet forces Derek to re-evaluate his understanding of the past. Later in his career, his relationship with the former enemy leader Desslok becomes a complex and sometimes uneasy alliance.
Derek’s abilities extend beyond his tactical mind and leadership. He is an exceptionally talented and aggressive fighter pilot, often personally leading attack squadrons like the Black Tigers into dangerous situations. His development is a long arc of a young man recklessly seeking revenge to a seasoned commander who bears the heavy burden of protecting Earth, balancing tactical boldness with empathy and making difficult choices that will secure humanity's future.
