Description
Fergus is a Pokémon Trainer from the Kanto region who appears as a supporting character in the film. His Japanese name, Umio, derives from the word for ocean, reflecting his strong connection to Water-type Pokémon.

As one of the few trainers who successfully navigated the treacherous storm created by Mewtwo to reach New Island, Fergus proved his determination and resourcefulness early on. He traveled across the rough seas on the back of his Gyarados, a feat that not only demonstrates his courage but also his considerable skill as a trainer, as Gyarados is notoriously difficult to tame and train. Physically, Fergus is a teenage boy with brown hair that reaches his neck and dark eyes, typically seen wearing a tank top and fingerless gloves.

In terms of personality, Fergus presents himself as a tough and somewhat stubborn individual, often seen with his arms crossed in a confident posture. He holds a deep belief in the strength of his own Pokémon and has a particular pride in his team, most of which are blue in coloration. This pride, however, is balanced by a genuine care for his partners. After his Gyarados is injured in a confrontation with Mewtwo, Fergus shows his compassionate side by entering a pool of water to comfort and attend to his wounded Pokémon.

Fergus's primary motivation in the story is typical of a skilled trainer seeking to prove himself. He accepts an invitation to New Island under the impression that he will meet and battle the world's greatest Pokémon Master. His role in the narrative becomes crucial when the host of the event is revealed to be Mewtwo itself. Fergus is the first trainer to vocally object, shouting that a Pokémon cannot also be a Trainer, which directly challenges Mewtwo's authority and sets the confrontational tone for the events that follow. He backs up his words with action by commanding his Gyarados to attack Mewtwo with Hyper Beam, but the powerful Psychic-type Pokémon easily overcomes the challenge.

Fergus's key relationships are primarily with his own team of Pokémon, which consists of Gyarados, Seadra, Golduck, Tentacruel, Vaporeon, and notably a Nidoqueen. While he declares all his Pokémon are Water-types, Nidoqueen is actually a Poison- and Ground-type, though it shares a similar color scheme and can learn Water-type moves, suggesting Fergus may favor aesthetics or battle coverage over strict typing. Alongside the other trainers who reached the island, including Ash, Misty, Brock, Neesha, and Corey, Fergus and his Pokémon are captured by Mewtwo, who proceeds to create clones of them to serve in his army.

Like the other trainers, Fergus experiences a form of development through the film's climax. He watches from the sidelines as the original and cloned Pokémon battle endlessly. The conflict reaches a turning point when Ash sacrifices himself to stop the fighting, an act that leads Mewtwo to have a revelation about the value of life and the pointlessness of the conflict. In the aftermath, Mewtwo erases the memories of all humans and Pokémon on the island, including Fergus, to wipe away the trauma of the events. Consequently, Fergus does not retain any conscious memory of his confrontation with Mewtwo or the moral lessons learned, and he is later seen on the pier with Officer Jenny and the other trainers, watching the storm clouds miraculously clear away without understanding why.

Regarding notable abilities, Fergus's primary skill lies in his capacity as a Pokémon trainer. His most significant accomplishment is taming and commanding a powerful Gyarados, a feat that sets him apart from average trainers and marks him as highly capable. His team composition, which includes a mix of pure Water-types and the unconventional Nidoqueen, suggests a pragmatic approach to battling that values power and versatility.
