Description
Quincy Issa, whose real name is Iiko Isami, is the elder sister of Yuu Isami and the commander of the Grand Cher unit of the Reclaimer organization operating within the vast structure known as Orphan. She is a young woman of about nineteen, described as petite and slender, with dark brown hair cut to neck length and blue eyes. She pilots a red Grand Cher known as the Quincy Grand.
The name Quincy Issa reflects her attempt to define herself on her own terms. The name was suggested to her by Jonathan Glenn as one befitting a queen, and she embraces it enthusiastically, rejecting her birth name and insisting that even her parents address her as Quincy. Her desire is to be recognized as the queen of the Grand Cher unit rather than as a member of the Isami family. This stems from her difficult upbringing. She and her brother were the children of Kensaku and Midori Isami, researchers wholly devoted to the study of Orphan, and the couple left the two children in the care of their grandmother Naoko while pursuing their work. From early childhood, Iiko was subjected to pilot aptitude experiments by her parents, experiences that warped her personality. She was originally an affectionate and family-oriented girl, but the experiments and the gradual progression of Orphan's influence shaped her into a fierce, volatile, and emotionally unstable person, one whose pride as a Reclaimer hardened into a harsh outward demeanor.
As a leader, Quincy is brash, ruthless, and cold, deliberately setting aside human emotion in her conduct. Her central motivation is to realize herself independently of her parents, and she goes to great lengths to distance herself from the family identity, including adopting a new name. She resents Yuu for what she perceives as his favoritism by the Antibodies of Orphan, and she regards his decision to leave the Reclaimers as an unforgivable betrayal. Toward him she carries a tangled mixture of love and hatred. She considers him the only true family she has, yet she is consumed by anger over his abandonment and at times threatens to kill him with her own hands. Within the story's conflict, Quincy commands the Reclaimer antibody squads against the crew of Novis Noah and relentlessly hunts Yuu, clashing with him repeatedly in her red machine. The rigidity of her devotion to Orphan's cause eventually becomes her undoing. Confused by Yuu's belief that Orphan should be freed from its destructive role, she finds her own machine turning against her, as her Grand Cher rebels against her unsettled state. In that condition she is favored by Orphan to become the Girl of Orphan, the chosen embodiment of its will. Her Grand Cher is eventually captured by Novis Noah, and only after she surrenders does she come to understand the bonds of her family and her brother's feelings, recovering the affectionate nature she once had.
Even then, her deep love for the Grand Cher and for Orphan makes her unwilling to abandon them, and she chooses to become a complete antibody of Orphan. It is her brother's persuasion that finally separates her from Orphan and allows her to return to her family. Her development carries her from a cold, resentful antagonist into someone who recovers her sense of self and her place among those who care for her.
