Description
Aguille Delaz is the commander of the Delaz Fleet and the principal architect of Operation Stardust, serving as the main antagonist force in the conflict. His background is rooted in the highest echelons of the Principality of Zeon during the One Year War. Originally a captain in the Zeon forces, he served as the commander of the Gwadan, the flagship of the Space Strike Fleet under the Solomon Defense Corps. A loyal follower of Gihren Zabi, Delaz was present at the decisive Battle of A Baoa Qu. Upon receiving news of Gihren's assassination by his sister Kycilia, Delaz, seeing the cause as lost and refusing to serve under her, made the critical decision to withdraw his fleet from the battlefield rather than continue fighting.

Following the war and the formal surrender of the Zeon forces, Delaz refused to accept the ceasefire terms. Instead of retreating with the majority of the surviving Zeon military to the asteroid base Axis, he chose to remain in the Earth Sphere. Gathering a force of like-minded volunteers and remnants of the Zeon military, he established a secret base known as the Garden of Thorns in the shoal zone created by the destruction of Side 5. For three years, his fleet engaged in guerrilla warfare against the Earth Federation, quietly building its strength and seeking an opportunity to strike back. This period of preparation reveals his patience and long-term strategic thinking.

Personality-wise, Delaz is portrayed as an idealist and a staunch believer in the cause of Spacenoid autonomy. While he is a follower of Gihren Zabi's ideology, his character is often described as noble and high-minded. He is a composed and charismatic leader who commands the absolute loyalty of his men, most notably the ace pilot Anavel Gato. Unlike some Zeon officers who resorted to barbaric tactics, Delaz is shown to operate with a certain sense of honor, believing he is fighting to expose what he perceives as the corruption and hypocrisy of the Earth Federation. His motivations are not driven by personal power but by the dream of reviving Zeon and achieving independence for the space colonies. He sees Operation Stardust not merely as a military revenge but as a grand statement to turn the eyes of the people back to space and break the Federation's grip on the Earth Sphere.

In the story, Delaz's role is that of the master strategist. His primary motivation for Operation Stardust is twofold: to expose the Federation's deceit and to create an irreversible crisis. The plan was set in motion with the theft of the RX-78GP02A Gundam, a mobile suit equipped with a nuclear warhead, from the Federation's Torrington Base in Australia. This act was designed to humiliate the Federation and provide the weaponry necessary for the next phase. The operation culminated in a devastating nuclear attack on the Federation's naval review at Konpei Island (the former Solomon space fortress), followed by the hijacking and controlled drop of a space colony onto the Earth. His ultimate goal was to destroy the Federation's primary food production regions in North America, causing economic chaos that would weaken Earth's dominance over space.

Key relationships define Delaz's actions and ultimate fate. His most significant subordinate is Anavel Gato, the legendary Nightmare of Solomon. Delaz places immense trust in Gato, viewing him as the ideal soldier who can carry out the most critical parts of the operation. Their bond is that of a commander and his most trusted ace, with Gato serving as the living embodiment of the fleet's fighting spirit. Another crucial but fraught relationship is with Cima Garahau. Delaz forms an alliance with Cima and her marine fleet, believing their forces are necessary to complete the operation. However, this alliance is built on a deep mutual distrust. Delaz is aware of Cima's treacherous nature and her infamous past, yet he believes he can control her for the sake of the mission. This miscalculation proves fatal.

Delaz's development in the narrative is less about personal change and more about the steadfast execution of his grand vision. He remains resolute and unyielding, even as the operation nears its conclusion and the situation turns against him. His finest and final moment comes when Cima, betraying the alliance, seizes control of his flagship, the Gwaden. Rather than beg for his life or compromise his principles, Delaz remains defiant. He is shot and killed by Cima after refusing to call off the attack, his final act being to encourage Gato to complete the mission. He dies a martyr to his cause, never seeing the colony successfully impact the Earth, but secure in the knowledge that his plan is in motion.

As a commander, Delaz's notable abilities lie in his strategic acumen, leadership, and organizational skill. He is not a frontline mobile suit pilot but a fleet commander and strategist. His greatest ability is his vision: he was able to conceive a complex, multi-phase operation that exploited the Federation's arrogance and vulnerabilities. Over three years, he successfully organized and supplied a clandestine fleet from within enemy territory, a testament to his logistical and leadership capabilities. His legacy, while controversial, is that of a man who sacrificed everything to strike a blow against the Earth Federation, an act that would have long-lasting political repercussions in the Universal Century.
