Description
Kō Uraki is the protagonist of Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory. He is a young Earth Federation test pilot assigned to the Torrington Base in Australia at the start of the story. In terms of background, Kō is a recent graduate of the Federation’s officer training program, but he lacks real combat experience. He holds the rank of Ensign and is initially part of the experimental unit known as the “Phantom Bullet” corps, working on the Gundam Development Project.

Personality wise, Kō is earnest, hot-headed, and driven by a strong sense of duty, though he often lets his emotions override his judgment. He can be impulsive and stubborn, especially when provoked, but beneath that exterior lies a sincere desire to protect others and prove himself. He is not naturally gifted as a pilot in the way that some Newtype protagonists are; instead, he relies on raw determination and practice. Early on, he shows insecurity about his abilities compared to more seasoned pilots, which sometimes leads to reckless actions.

Kō’s primary motivation shifts over the course of the story. At first, he is simply eager to do his job and test the new mobile suits. However, after the Zeon remnant forces led by Anavel Gato steal the RX-78GP02A Gundam “Physalis” from Torrington, Kō becomes personally driven to recover the Gundam and stop Gato. This mission takes on deeper meaning as he witnesses the devastation caused by Gato’s actions, especially the nuclear attack on the Federation’s naval review, and as he becomes entangled in the political conspiracy behind the Gundam Development Project.

In the story, Kō serves as the primary viewpoint character. His arc follows the classic trajectory of a young pilot thrust into a major conflict, forced to mature rapidly under fire. He is assigned to the assault carrier Albion and participates in numerous sorties across Earth and space. His role is that of the pursuing hero, chasing Gato across the globe and into the Zeon fortress of A Baoa Qu’s ruins, but he is repeatedly outmaneuvered both tactically and politically. Unlike many Gundam protagonists, Kō does not single-handedly win the final battle; instead, he is ultimately sidelined by the Federation’s own cover-up of the Delaz Conflict, which fits the story’s grim, realistic tone.

Key relationships define much of his development. His rivalry and obsession with Anavel Gato, the “Nightmare of Solomon,” is central to the plot. Gato represents everything Kō is not—cold, calculating, and ideologically certain. Kō’s interactions with his commanding officer, Lieutenant Commander South Burning, serve as a crucial mentorship; Burning’s death in combat deeply affects Kō and hardens his resolve. His friendship with fellow pilot Chuck Keith is a grounding presence, offering levity and support. The romantic subplot with Nina Purpleton, the lead engineer of the Gundam Development Project, is fraught with tension. Nina initially supports Kō but later reveals a past relationship with Gato, leading to a dramatic betrayal in the final episodes that leaves Kō emotionally shattered.

Development wise, Kō transforms from a brash, untested rookie into a bitter but hardened combat veteran. He learns to control his impulsiveness to some degree, though he never fully loses his passionate nature. By the end of the story, he has witnessed his mentor’s death, failed to stop Gato’s colony drop on North America, and been betrayed by Nina. He is arrested and imprisoned by the Federation as a scapegoat for the GP series’ existence, which violates the Antarctic Treaty. This ending—a defeated, imprisoned hero—reinforces the story’s themes of futility and the corrupting nature of power.

Notable abilities include piloting mobile suits, especially the Federation’s test units. Kō proves adept at handling the RX-78GP01 Gundam “Zephyranthes” and its space-conversion form, the GP01Fb “Full Vernian.” Later, he pilots the heavily armed RX-78GP03 Gundam “Dendrobium,” a massive mobile armor armed with an “Orchis” weapons pod. Though not a Newtype, Kō demonstrates exceptional spatial awareness and reaction time, often surviving through sheer grit and improvisation. His signature combat style is aggressive, close-range fighting, frequently using the GP01’s beam rifle and the Dendrobium’s folding bazooka. Despite his skills, he is often outclassed by the more experienced Gato, and his victories usually come at great personal cost.
