OVA
Description
Alpha A. Bate is a fictional character from the OVA series Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, serving as a supporting character within the Earth Federation Forces. At 28 years old with blond hair, he holds the rank of lieutenant and is a veteran mobile suit pilot.
Bate is a seasoned soldier who survived the One Year War as a member of the renowned Immortal 4th Team, where he served alongside South Burning, Bernard Monsha, and Chap Adel. He participated in major conflicts, including the Battle of Loum and the invasion of Solomon. Following the war, he was stationed with Monsha and Adel before being reassigned to the assault ship Albion to assist in the pursuit of the stolen RX-78GP02A Gundam, which reunited him with his former commander, Burning.
In terms of personality, Bate is known for his quarrelsome and hot-tempered nature. He is often seen as a troublemaker alongside his close friend Bernard Monsha, though his own abrasive behavior tends to manifest as a short fuse rather than Monsha's flirtatious provocations. Bate possesses a dirty mouth and enjoys watching Monsha toy with the younger pilot Kou Uraki, even if he does not actively participate in the schemes. Despite his rough exterior, he demonstrates a sense of loyalty to his comrades, once stating that he can get angry when colleagues are bullied.
As a pilot, Bate is highly capable, having survived intense battles and piloted machines such as the RGM-79GS GM Command Space Type and later the RGM-79N GM Custom. He is aggressive in combat, once famously smashing a Dom Tropfen and taunting his enemy with a raised middle finger, though his bravado has also led to moments of humiliation, such as losing his GM Custom's leg to a Zaku attack immediately after.
Following the death of South Burning, Bate is promoted to captain by a wartime field commission from Captain Synapse and takes command of the Albion's mobile suit squadron. This promotion marks a turning point, as he awakens to his role as a leader and loses much of his former temper, successfully organizing the squad to survive the Delaz Conflict. After the conflict concludes, Bate, along with most of the Albion crew, is assigned to the newly formed Titans, an elite counter-insurgency unit.
