Description
Chooki Mason is one of the main protagonists of the anime Tenkai Knights and is the human identity of the legendary warrior Lydendor. He is a thirteen-year-old boy with a distinctive appearance that includes bright emerald green eyes, yellow bangs, and ginger hair pulled back into a short ponytail. His typical outfit consists of a navy blue t-shirt worn under a metal shoulder-padded, yellow sleeveless jacket vest, paired with dark grey sweatpants and white sneakers.
Chooki is characterized by a calm and composed demeanor, which sets a steady tone for his team. He is the best athlete among the main characters and consistently looks forward to a new challenge, a trait that fuels his competitive spirit. Beyond his physical prowess, he is also diligent in his academic life, striving to do his best in every subject. This drive to excel means he becomes notably disturbed when encountering something he cannot master, such as fishing, an activity that has been shown to test his patience. His personality balances a pride in his own abilities with a deep-seated loyalty to his friends, often leading him to put himself at risk to protect them. Throughout the series, he functions as a key strategist for the Knights, frequently using sports terminology to devise plans during battles.
In his role within the story, Chooki holds the core of the Tenkai Knight Lydendor, later evolving to call himself Lydendor Tenkai Lightning Strike after unlocking more advanced forms. He describes his fighting style with the moniker Tenkai Agility. When transformed, he wields a short blade attached to a chain, allowing him to use it as a flail or in melee combat, and carries a shield equipped with three curved blades that can be thrown and return to him. He is the third member of the group to unlock Titan Mode, a powerful transformation that enlarges him to twice his normal size; in this state, his shield resembles a large shuriken used for both offense and defense.
His relationships with the other protagonists evolve significantly over the course of the series. Chooki first appears alongside Toxsa Dalton, and the two initially operate as a duo, believing themselves to be more experienced than newcomers Guren Nash and Ceylan Jones. This leads to a bumpy start where he rejects early proposals to form a larger team. However, after a necessary collaboration to defeat a common enemy, the four boys officially unite as a single team. Within this group, Chooki and Guren often function as the more responsible leaders, balancing out the lighter-hearted antics of Ceylan and Toxsa. His relationship with Toxsa is particularly notable; despite their differing interests in sports versus video games, they share a strong bond. In a key episode, Chooki takes a hit from a Jinx Cannon to save Toxsa, resulting in a clumsy curse that forces him to bench himself. Toxsa's subsequent encouragement and a gift of a lucky charm help Chooki overcome the jinx and unlock his Titan Mode, demonstrating their mutual influence on each other's growth.
Chooki undergoes clear development from a somewhat skeptical and self-reliant individual into a cohesive team player and a source of inspiration. Initially, he is not convinced that a four-person team can work effectively. A turning point occurs when he learns a lesson about belief and training from the enigmatic shopkeeper Mr. White. While Guren struggled to unlock a new power, Chooki passed on wisdom he had received: the form of training matters less than believing in the training itself. This advice directly enables Guren to achieve his Titan Mode for the first time. This event highlights Chooki's shift from a skeptical individual to a supportive and encouraging leader for his team. Furthermore, he demonstrates remarkable strategic thinking during a battle when his team faced a fused enemy called a robofusion. Unable to track the enemy normally, Chooki applied the patience and sensory focus he had learned from his frustrating failures at fishing on Earth, successfully locating and defeating the opponent. This moment shows his ability to turn personal weaknesses into tactical strengths. In another instance, he faced a clone of himself created by a guardian, a trial that further tested his resolve. These experiences collectively shape him from a prideful athlete into a wise, loyal, and strategically invaluable member of the Tenkai Knights.
