TV-Series
Description
Deishū Kaiki is a tall, pale man with a gloomy and ominous appearance, typically dressed in a black funeral suit with a loosely tied necktie. He has a tired, melancholic look, with dark bags under his eyes and a generally unsmiling expression. In the events of Hanamonogatari, he appears with a slightly more polished look, including a neatly trimmed goatee and glasses, though his fundamental aura remains somber.
Kaiki possesses a deeply cynical and nihilistic personality, subscribing to the view that nothing in the world is inherently true. The sole absolute in his life is money, as he believes it can replace anything, including concepts like love and happiness. He is a master of deception, fluent in the arts of lying and subterfuge, which makes his true motivations constantly unclear. Kaiki proudly admits to having no pride, openly identifying as a conman and an impostor. He is a thorough pragmatist, willing to compromise or retreat as needed to maximize profit or minimize losses, and he often finds motivation in being told to stop, taking warnings as personal challenges. Despite his dishonest nature, he operates with a peculiar system of personal morals, sometimes keeping promises when he sees a personal benefit in doing so.
Kaiki is a conman who specializes in fake apparitions. He possesses extensive knowledge of the paranormal, which he learned as a university student in the same occult research club as Meme Oshino, Yozuru Kagenui, and Izuko Gaen. Paradoxically, despite his expertise, he does not personally believe in the existence of these supernatural entities. Instead, he exploits the fears and beliefs of others to make money by selling fraudulent charms and curses.
His background is marked by several significant actions. He was the first of five conmen who swindled the Senjougahara family, tricking Hitagi's father and taking their money, an act that contributed to her parents' divorce. However, it is later suggested that this cruel act was motivated by his belief that Hitagi's mother was a negative influence and that removing her was ultimately for Hitagi's own good, revealing a twisted sense of compassion. He is also the mastermind behind the spread of fake "magic spells" that became popular among middle school students, including Nadeko Sengoku.
A key aspect of Kaiki's motivation, which becomes central to his actions in Hanamonogatari, is his past relationship with Tooe Gaen, the mother of Suruga Kanbaru. He once harbored strong feelings of admiration for Tooe and made a promise to her before her death to protect her daughter. Consequently, his connection to Suruga is unique; he shows her unconditional kindness, never attempts to swindle her, and honors his promise to her mother. This promise is the primary reason he agrees to take on dangerous jobs, explaining his willingness to help Hitagi Senjougahara and Koyomi Araragi against the snake god Nadeko, as it was a way to indirectly protect Suruga.
In Hanamonogatari, Kaiki meets with Suruga Kanbaru. During this encounter, he reveals that the "woman of his dreams" was her mother. He offers Suruga his business card, with the usual "ghost buster" moniker scratched off, and tells her to call him if she is ever in need. Not long after, he sends her the mummified devil's head, a rare and valuable oddity which he claims was given to him by Tooe Gaen.
Kaiki's most notable ability is his mastery of deception and psychological manipulation. He is an expert liar who can fluidly adapt his interactions to achieve his goals, using wordplay and subterfuge to control situations. He is also highly observant and logical, able to quickly analyze complex and irrational situations, as demonstrated when he deduces the root of a curse or formulates a strategy to deceive a god. While his primary skills are mental, he is also physically capable, having been a member of the track and field club in his youth, possessing a unique running style referred to as the "Kaiki Stride" that allows him to easily catch up to a sprinting Suruga Kanbaru. His methods are meticulous; when planning a con, he uses A4 notebooks to write detailed plans and draw maps, which he later destroys after the job is complete. Despite his claims of being a simple conman, he has survived direct confrontation with supernatural forces, further demonstrating his resourcefulness and resilience.
