Description
Hatsuna Wakabayashi is a magician, also referred to as a witch, who becomes a supporting character and later a protagonist. She possesses brown hair styled in a short cut with a distinctive side ponytail held by a blue ribbon, and she has dark blue eyes. Her physical stats include a height of 160 centimeters.
Hatsuna's personality is defined by a deep-seated distrust of people, particularly ordinary humans. This skepticism stems from a traumatic past event where a friend who called her a best friend fled in terror after witnessing Hatsuna's regenerative abilities, declaring them to be disgusting. As a result, she is initially wary and tests the sincerity of others. This is most clearly demonstrated when she tricks Ryouta Murakami into climbing a radio tower, dangling him over a fatal fall to see if he would abandon her to save himself. His refusal to let go, even at the risk of his own life, proves his trustworthiness to her. Once her trust is earned, however, her demeanor changes dramatically. She becomes remarkably blunt and forward, immediately asking Ryouta to be her boyfriend and stealing a kiss from him. She also displays a notable lack of modesty, engaging in behavior such as playfully groping her fellow witches.
Like all escaped magicians, Hatsuna knows that her life is dependent on a constant supply of death-suppressant pills, without which her body will eventually melt. Her primary motivation shifts from simple survival to protecting and being part of the group after joining the Astronomy Club, who share their limited supply of medicine with her. Her initial hoarding of pills for herself gives way to a more cooperative nature as she bonds with her new companions.
Within the story, Hatsuna serves as a crucial ally whose unique abilities offer a form of protection that the other witches lack. Her background differs slightly between the manga and the anime adaptation. In the manga, she was one of the B-ranked witches who escaped during a facility crash, surviving off overlooked boxes of death-suppressants. In the anime, she is introduced as an A-ranked witch who was part of a group sent to capture another witch, Valkyria, before being killed and left for dead. In both versions, she survives a lethal attack by regenerating and makes her way to the observatory that serves as the Astronomy Club's base.
Her key relationships are central to her development. Her bond with Ryouta Murakami is pivotal; after he proves his character, she becomes openly affectionate and considers him a potential boyfriend, often clashing with the other love rivals, Kazumi Schlierenzauer and Neko Kuroha. She forms a strong friendship with the rest of the Astronomy Club members, including Kana, Kotori, and Kazumi, risking her life multiple times to save them. A significant relationship later develops with a character named Masashi Takaya. After initially keeping her distance, she agrees to a date with him, and he confesses his feelings for her even after learning she is a witch.
Hatsuna undergoes considerable development, most notably during the manga-only narrative where she faces the process of hatching, a terminal transformation that turns a witch into a monstrous creature. After a premonition of this event, she is thrown into despair. She hatches while with Takaya, attacking him and others in her monstrous state. Remarkably, she becomes the only witch to return to her original body after hatching, partially due to her unique powers and the intervention of her friends. She survives this ordeal and begins a relationship with Takaya as promised.
Hatsuna's notable ability is regeneration, classified as a form of magic. Her power is extraordinarily potent, allowing her to survive and completely reform her body after being sliced in half, reduced to only her feet, or even blown to pieces. This ability is tied to an organ called a Drasil within her Harness; as long as the Drasil remains intact, she can regenerate. Furthermore, she possesses the ability to heal fatal wounds on others, even bringing recently deceased individuals back to life. However, this use of her power on others comes at a great cost, causing her own body to melt and enter a "hung-up" state, from which she slowly recovers over time. Her power makes her a critical asset to the group, capable of recovering from injuries that would permanently kill any other witch.
