Description
Gong Strong, known as Noboru Gongenzaka in the original Japanese version, is a prominent character from the anime Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V. He is a 14-year-old close childhood friend of the protagonist, Yuya Sakaki. Gong is the heir to his family's dojo, which teaches a unique approach to dueling. His background is rooted in supporting Yuya during difficult times, notably protecting him from bullies following the disappearance of Yuya's father, Yusho Sakaki.

In terms of personality, Gong is defined by his serious, proud, and unwavering nature. He adheres strictly to the philosophy of Steadfast Dueling, also known as the Heavystrong style, which dictates that a duelist must stand firmly in one spot throughout a match and refuse to collect Action Cards. He speaks politely but is easily roused to anger, particularly by those he considers arrogant or disrespectful towards dueling. Despite his gruff exterior, he is extremely loyal and sentimental, especially towards his friends. He has a habit of referring to himself in the third person and often exclaims "Unforgivable" when witnessing unjust behavior. Following a draw with the Synchro user Kit Blade, Gong's primary motivation shifts from pure adherence to his style to a desire for self-improvement, leading him to seek out instruction in Synchro Summoning to enhance his Steadfast Dueling.

Gong plays a significant role in the story as an early ally and a member of the Lancers, a group of elite duelists chosen to fight against invaders from other dimensions. His key relationships include his friendship with Yuya, whom he constantly encourages and challenges to become stronger. He also shares a significant rivalry with Kit Blade, whose dueling prowess inspires Gong to evolve his own strategies. He has a mentor-student dynamic with his father, the master of the Strong Dojo, who initially disapproves of Gong incorporating outside techniques.

Throughout the series, Gong undergoes clear development. Initially, he rigidly follows the Steadfast style, refusing to use Spell or Trap Cards and relying exclusively on his Superheavy Samurai monster cards. His character evolves after acknowledging the strength of other summoning methods. He humbles himself to learn Synchro Summoning from a rival, integrating it into his deck to create a new ace monster, Superheavy Samurai Warlord Susanowo. This evolution allows him to adapt his principles without abandoning them, as he finds ways to use his opponent's Spell Cards from their graveyard. Later, he also incorporates Pendulum Monsters into his strategy.

Gong possesses notable abilities both as a fighter and a duelist. Physically, his intense Steadfast training has made him extraordinarily strong, capable of withstanding attacks from Solid Vision monsters, punching through concrete, and drawing cards with enough force to create a gust of wind. In dueling, his deck is composed entirely of Superheavy Samurai monsters, which are notable for being able to attack while in Defense Position, using their high DEF points for damage calculation. His primary strategy involves using his ace monster, Superheavy Samurai Big Benkei, and supporting it with various monster effects from his hand or graveyard to raise its defense or protect it. After learning Synchro Summoning, he gains access to monsters with even more powerful and versatile effects that complement his immovable dueling philosophy.
