TV-Series
Description
Declan Akaba is a primary character and the secondary Chief Executive Officer of the Leo Corporation, a major gaming company responsible for the creation of Action Duels. A super-elite duelist with a genius-level intellect, he holds the distinction of being the youngest person in history to be certified for the professional dueling circuit, achieving this at the age of fifteen. He is the founder of the Lancers, a specialized group formed to fight against invaders from other dimensions, and he functions as the primary rival to Yuya Sakaki.

Declan is a thin young man with pale skin and grey hair, the front layer being a noticeably lighter shade than the back. He has purple eyes and typically wears red-framed spectacles, with black stud earrings in both ears. Despite his high-ranking position, his usual attire is casual, consisting of a dark-blue sweater, white pants that end above the ankles, white shoes, and a long red scarf wrapped around his shoulders. On the rare occasions when he wishes to observe events discreetly, he conceals his identity beneath a large-hooded sweatshirt.

In general, Declan has a grim, serious, and intensely calm demeanor. He is unfailingly polite and remains level-headed in almost all situations. Despite his exceptional skills, he does not display overt arrogance, though he is highly analytical and a skilled strategist, claiming he only plays games he knows he can win. He takes a strong interest in Yuya Sakaki, partly due to Yuya's mastery of Pendulum Summoning and his embodiment of Entertainment Dueling. Declan holds a deep and fierce respect for Yuya's missing father, Yusho Sakaki, defending him passionately when insulted. While he initially views empathy as a weakness in battle, he does seem to genuinely enjoy dueling. He is a pragmatist, willing to form alliances with former enemies like Shay and Selena despite their past attacks on his students, and he can show a less moral side in executing his plans, such as allowing duelists to be carded during a battle royal to identify the strongest survivors. During his second duel with Yuya, he demonstrated a cruel indifference, using Yuya's feelings for Zuzu Boyle to manipulate him into dueling more efficiently. Despite his cold and calculating nature, he cares deeply for his younger adoptive brother, Reira, and shares a good relationship with his mother, Henrietta.

Declan's primary motivation is to stop the interdimensional war and the ambitions of his father, Leo Akaba, whose plans for dimensional fusion have caused immense suffering across the four dimensions. An event three years prior to the series, in which he inadvertently crossed into the Fusion Dimension and witnessed Leo's forces capturing a girl named Selena, exposed him to his father's destructive goals. From that point, he dedicated himself to building a force capable of defending the Standard Dimension and countering his father's campaign.

In the story, Declan serves as the calculating and strategic mastermind behind the resistance against the Fusion Dimension. After witnessing Yuya's first Pendulum Summon, he became intensely interested in the mechanic and sought to understand and replicate it. He organized the Maiami Championship, secretly using the tournament as a means to scout and recruit powerful duelists for his Lancer force. He later led this group on expeditions into the Synchro and Fusion Dimensions to confront the forces of Duel Academy directly. His role gradually shifts from that of a distant and mysterious rival to a crucial, though sometimes morally ambiguous, ally in the fight for the fate of all dimensions.

His key relationships are central to his character. His rivalry with Yuya Sakaki is the most prominent, defined by mutual respect and opposing philosophies on the role of emotion in dueling. His relationship with his father, Leo Akaba, is one of stark opposition, as he seeks to dismantle Leo's plans rather than join him. He is a protective and guiding figure for his younger brother, Reira, having taught him how to duel. He also works closely with his mother, Henrietta, who supports his position as CEO, and his loyal subordinate, Nakajima.

Throughout the series, Declan undergoes notable development. He begins as a nearly unflappable and secretive figure who keeps his true knowledge and plans hidden. He firmly believes that emotions are a liability in battle. However, through his repeated encounters with Yuya, whose dueling strength is intrinsically linked to his feelings, Declan is forced to re-evaluate this stance. He learns to place his trust in others, notably allowing Yuya to take the lead in critical moments during the final battle. His cold pragmatism is tempered by a growing acknowledgment that the bonds between people, which he once saw as weaknesses, can be a powerful source of strength.

Declan is renowned for his prodigious dueling abilities. He is a master of all pre-existing summoning methods, including Fusion, Synchro, and Xyz Summoning, long before he acquires Pendulum Summoning. In his first on-screen duel, he seamlessly performed all three of these summoning types in a single turn. He later successfully developed and incorporated Pendulum Summoning into his own strategy. His signature deck is the D/D (Different Dimension) and D/D/D (Different Dimension Demon) archetype, which is centered around "Covenant" or "Dark Contract" spell and trap cards that inflict damage on him in exchange for powerful effects. He is also physically adept, able to perform athletic maneuvers to navigate the Action Field and collect Action Cards. His intelligence extends beyond dueling, as he is a brilliant strategist capable of formulating complex plans to counter dimensional invasions on extremely short notice.
