Description
Dipper O'rion, known as Hokuto Shijima in the original Japanese version, is a character from the anime Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V. He is a student at the prestigious Leo Institute of Dueling, where he serves as the representative for the Xyz Summon course. Among his peers, he is recognized as an exceptional duelist, reportedly maintaining a win rate of ninety percent in his class.
Dipper has a slim and tall build, with distinctive purple hair styled upwards and held by a gold pin shaped like the Big Dipper asterism. He has blue eyes and also wears a star-shaped frame on his forehead. His attire consists of a zip-up blue and purple jacket over a white long-sleeved shirt, white pants, olive-colored shoes, and a loose blue belt. The badge of the Leo Institute of Dueling is pinned on the right side of his jacket, and he carries his Deck in a holster on his belt.
In his first appearance, Dipper displays a callous and arrogant personality, with a cruel manner of Action Dueling that shows little concern for his opponent's safety. During his initial duel against Yuya Sakaki, he deliberately times his card effects and attacks to put Yuya in physical danger, such as causing him to almost fall from a rooftop. His arrogance is coupled with a fragile sense of pride; receiving any damage to his Life Points is enough to send him into a rage, and he becomes deeply depressed when his defeat is pointed out by others. Dipper also has a strong sense of superiority regarding Xyz Summoning, becoming incensed when he sees Xyz Monsters used to attack his school and vowing to prove that the Leo Institute's Xyz techniques are the strongest.
Dipper's primary motivation is to uphold the honor and reputation of his school's Xyz Summoning course. He is initially deployed alongside his fellow course representatives, Julia Krystal and Kit Blade, to duel members of the You Show Duel School as retaliation for a perceived attack on another student. His role in the story is that of a rival and an early obstacle for the protagonist, Yuya Sakaki, serving to demonstrate the power of Xyz Summoning in a world where Pendulum Summoning is just emerging. Later, he becomes part of a trio with Julia and Kit, working together to investigate attacks on Leo Institute students.
His key relationships are with his fellow course representatives. He duels alongside Julia Krystal and Kit Blade on multiple occasions, and they are frequently seen together as a group. There is a sense of camaraderie between them, though Dipper's arrogance often puts him at odds with Julia's more serious and observant nature, especially after his defeat. He also develops a rivalry with Yuya Sakaki after their first duel, and though he disapproves of Yuya's methods, he later follows him to investigate a potential threat.
Dipper experiences notable development following his defeat by Yuya Sakaki. The loss severely damages his pride, making him less boastful and arrogant than before. He begins to show rare signs of humility, such as complimenting another duelist's Deck, a behavior his friends note as unusual for him. Later in the series, during the Arc League Championship, Dipper wins his first-round duel easily but is subsequently attacked and sealed into a card by Celina, which results in him losing his next match by default. He is eventually freed at the conclusion of the series' main conflict.
In terms of dueling abilities, Dipper specializes in Xyz Summoning and plays a Constellar Deck, which features monsters based on constellations and stars. His strategy focuses on quickly Xyz Summoning his ace monsters, Constellar Pleiades and Constellar Ptolemy M7. These powerful Xyz Monsters possess effects that can return the opponent's cards to the hand, effectively clearing the field of threats and leaving them open for direct attacks. He also makes expert use of his chosen Action Field, Cosmic Sanctuary, memorizing the locations where Action Cards appear to cut off his opponent's access to them and gain a strategic advantage. His knowledge of this field is so extensive that he considers it the most suitable battleground for his dueling style.
