Description
Gong Gongenzaka, known in the original Japanese version as Noboru Gongenzaka, is a prominent character and a steadfast ally to the protagonist, Yuya Sakaki. He is a fourteen-year-old student and the heir to the Gongenzaka Dojo, a facility that teaches a unique philosophy of dueling known as the Steadfast style. Gongenzaka's background is deeply intertwined with Yuya's; they have been close friends since early childhood. Following the mysterious disappearance of Yuya's father, Yuya became a target for bullies, and Gongenzaka consistently used his formidable physique and loyalty to protect him, even when the aggressor was a senior member of his own dojo. Their bond was further strengthened through countless informal duels over the years.
Gongenzaka’s personality is defined by a serious, proud, and fiercely disciplined nature. He is easily angered by what he perceives as disrespect or arrogance, particularly during duels, but he almost always speaks in a polite and formal manner. He has a habit of referring to himself in the third person, using phrases like "this man, Gongenzaka," and frequently declares situations to be "unforgivable". Despite his gruff exterior, he is deeply caring and protective of his friends, acting as a reliable and supportive big brother figure to Yuya and Zuzu Boyle. His core motivation is to uphold and evolve the Steadfast Dueling style passed down by his family. This philosophy dictates that a duelist should remain firmly in one spot during an Action Duel, refusing to run and collect Action Cards, and instead placing absolute trust in the strength of their own Deck. He believes this pure approach is the path to true strength, and any deviation is initially seen as a disgrace.
Throughout the story, Gongenzaka serves as a crucial pillar of support for Yuya and a key member of the Lancers, a group of elite duelists assembled to fight against the forces of the Fusion Dimension. His role evolves from a local rival and guardian to a world-crossing warrior. One of the most significant turning points for the character occurs after he fights an intense duel resulting in a draw, which forces him to confront the limitations of his rigid style. Seeking to grow stronger, he requests training from a Synchro-using duelist and learns to incorporate Synchro Summoning into his monster-only strategy. This evolution is initially met with disapproval from his traditionalist father, who views it as a theft of techniques from another school. However, seeing his son remain unwavering in his spot while mastering this new summoning method, the elder Gongenzaka accepts this as a necessary and valid evolution of the Steadfast way. This development exemplifies his character arc: progressing from a narrow adherence to tradition to a more flexible application of its core principles without losing his identity.
His key relationships are central to his development. His friendship with Yuya Sakaki is his most defining connection, and he follows Yuya across dimensions to help save him and their friends. He shares a mutual, respectful bond with Zuzu Boyle as another of his childhood friends. His relationship with his father, Mr. Gongenzaka, is strict but loving, with the dojo master ultimately showing pride in his son's growth. He also develops a significant mentor-student relationship with the Synchro duelist Kit Blade, from whom he learns the skills necessary to evolve his dueling.
Gongenzaka possesses several notable abilities, both physical and strategic. Physically, his Steadfast training has granted him superhuman strength and endurance, allowing him to withstand direct attacks from real Solid Vision monsters, break concrete, and even draw cards with such force that he creates a gust of wind. In dueling, his strategy is uniquely built around his Superheavy Samurai deck, which consists exclusively of monster cards. He avoids using Spell or Trap cards entirely, as many of his monster effects require his Graveyard to have none. His monsters typically possess high Defense points, and his ace cards, such as Superheavy Samurai Big Benkei and the Synchro monster Superheavy Samurai Warlord Susanowo, allow him to attack while in Defense Position, using his formidable DEF stat for damage calculation. After mastering Synchro Summoning, his abilities expand further, allowing him to creatively use his opponent's Spell cards from their Graveyard, a powerful workaround to his own self-imposed restriction.
