Description
Grizzlepike Jones, known as Gen Ankokuji in the original Japanese version, is a character who appears in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V anime. He is a participant in the Junior Youth class of the Arc League Championship. Grizzlepike has a history as a former student of the Strong Dojo, where he learned the Steadfast Dueling style, which puts him in contact with Gong Strong. However, his personal beliefs came into conflict with the dojo's disciplined philosophy, leading him to leave of his own accord in an exit that was described as disgraceful. After leaving, he became unattached to any official Duel school but managed to qualify for the Junior Arc League Championship with six consecutive wins.
In terms of appearance, Grizzlepike is a tall and muscular young man with a physique comparable to that of Gong Strong. He wears blue pants and a red sash on his abdomen, paired with a purple shirt that has thick pauldrons and a blue jacket. He also notably wears steel bracers and sandals.
Grizzlepike's personality is defined by his malicious and win-at-all-costs attitude. He is a devoted follower of the professional duelist known as The Sledgehammer, and he derides Yusho Sakaki for fleeing rather than facing his idol for the championship. He believes solely in strength and has very little regard for moral or ethical concepts like sportsmanship. This is demonstrated by his willingness to bully and humiliate others, such as Yuya Sakaki, and his use of underhanded methods to disrupt his opponents during duels to break their spirit. At his core, Grizzlepike is a misanthrope who firmly believes that people will always betray one another and that there is nothing truly worth believing in the world. The only positive trait noted about him is that he is a studious duelist who prepares for his matches by researching his opponents' strategies, having once developed a countermeasure specifically for Gong Strong's Synchro Summoning tactics.
Grizzlepike's primary motivation stems from his idolization of The Sledgehammer and his cynical worldview. He is driven to prove that strength is the only truth and that loyalty and sportsmanship are meaningless. His role in the story is primarily as an antagonistic figure for Yuya Sakaki and a direct rival to his former dojo mate, Gong Strong. During the Arc League Championship, he is set up to duel Gong. In an attempt to ensure his victory, he orchestrates a scheme to have his friends steal Gong’s previous championship sash and lure Yuya away, believing the resulting panic would affect Gong’s performance. During the duel on the field Solitary Island in a Faraway Sea, he mocks Gong and uses his card effects to take control of Gong’s monsters, comparing their betrayal to what he assumes Yuya is doing to Gong. Despite bringing Gong down to 500 Life Points, he ultimately loses when Gong overcomes his panic and defeats him with a Synchro Summon.
His key relationship is with his idol, The Sledgehammer, to whom his deck is an homage. He also has a contentious relationship with Gong Strong, whom he knows from their time together at the Strong Dojo, as well as with Yuya Sakaki, whom he bullies and sees as weak. Later in the series, following the defeat of Zarc and the rebirth of the Standard Dimension into the Pendulum Dimension, Grizzlepike appears again as a spectator. Despite his earlier dislike for Yuya, he is seen watching Yuya's duels against Jack Atlas and Declan Akaba, and he applauds Yuya's victories, witnessing the revival of Zuzu Boyle.
In terms of notable abilities, Grizzlepike uses a Battleguard Deck, which is an homage to his idol, The Sledgehammer. His dueling strategy is a direct reflection of his philosophy that people betray one another. The main tactic of his deck revolves around taking control of an opponent's monsters, using cards like Shaman Battleguard, and then using those stolen monsters as Tribute for his own summons or to further his advantage.
