Description
Kit Blade, known as Yaiba Toudou in the original Japanese version, is a character from the anime Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V. He is a student at the Leo Institute of Dueling, where he serves as the representative for the Synchro Summon course. He later becomes one of the mentors to the duelist Gong Strong.
In terms of background, Kit Blade is introduced as a highly skilled honor student at his prestigious duel school. He is confident in his abilities and considers himself the strongest among his fellow course representatives. His distinctive appearance includes long, spiky brown hair, amber eyes, and noticeably long canine teeth that often protrude from his mouth. He is slightly below average height for his age and wears a dark blue long-sleeved shirt and pants under a sleeveless tan jacket with an orange interior, along with brown socks and burnt-orange and grey shoes. His most prominent accessory is a wooden katana, which he carries with him at all times. This sword is not merely for show; Kit uses it during Action Duels to retrieve Action Cards by swinging it hard enough to create gusts of wind that dislodge the cards from their hidden locations.
Kit Blade's personality is defined by a blend of confidence, pride, and a willingness to acknowledge the skills of others. He is less arrogant than he is self-assured, and he has no problem admitting when he is in trouble or when an opponent has genuinely impressed him. He takes great pride in his role as a teacher, believing strongly in the Synchro Summoning techniques he imparts to his student, Gong. When Gong struggles in a duel, Kit feels that his own reputation as a teacher is on the line, and he becomes frustrated. While he shows camaraderie with his fellow course representatives, Julia Krystal and Dipper O'rion, he can also be dismissive, occasionally referring to them as weaklings. He has a slight mean streak, as seen when he makes derisive comments about Yuya Sakaki's missing father, and in the English dub, he teasingly nicknames Gong Big Brows. His motivations are largely tied to his status as the Synchro course representative and his desire to prove his strength and the validity of his teachings.
Kit's role in the story is primarily that of a rival and later an ally to the main characters. He is initially tasked with defeating members of the You Show Duel School, which leads to his first major duel against Gong Strong. This duel ends in a draw, and it is from this encounter that Gong becomes inspired to ask Kit to teach him Synchro Summoning, a request that shocks Kit but ultimately creates a mentor-student bond between them. Kit also participates in a three-on-one Battle Royal duel against Shay Obsidian, alongside Julia and Dipper. Despite a strong coordinated effort, the three are overwhelmingly defeated by Shay's ace monster, Rise Falcon. Later, during the Arc League Championship, Kit is badly injured in his first match when his opponent, Iggy Arlo, physically attacks him to prevent him from collecting Action Cards, resulting in a swift loss.
The key relationships in Kit's life are centered on his fellow students and his pupil. He shares a friendly rivalry and teamwork dynamic with Julia Krystal, the Fusion course representative, and Dipper O'rion, the Xyz course representative. His most significant relationship is with Gong Strong. Kit is initially a condescending opponent, but he evolves into a dedicated and proud teacher for Gong, pushing him to master Synchro Summoning. After Shay's attack, the memories of the three LID students are altered to make them believe Shay was always a member of their group, creating a false relationship that goes uncorrected for some time. Later in the series, after the crisis involving Z-ARC is resolved and the world is reborn, Kit loses his memories of the interdimensional conflicts and is seen living peacefully, dueling with his friends and watching the final matches between the main characters.
Regarding development, Kit Blade's character arc sees him transition from a confident, somewhat arrogant rival to a more complex supporting figure. His initial pride is humbled by his defeat at the hands of Shay and later his own loss in the championship. His willingness to mentor Gong shows a capacity for investment in others' success beyond his own. By the end of the series, having lost his traumatic memories, he returns to a role as a supportive fellow student who has grown through the challenges he faced, even if he no longer remembers all of them.
As for his notable abilities, Kit Blade is a master of Synchro Summoning, a technique that uses Tuner monsters and non-Tuner monsters to summon powerful Synchro Monsters from the Extra Deck. His deck is an X-Saber deck, which focuses on swarming the field with multiple Synchro Monsters in a single turn. His strategy often involves summoning XX-Saber Gottoms, a powerful monster whose effect allows Kit to discard cards from his opponent's hand, disrupting their strategy. In the Action Field environment, Kit makes effective use of his wooden katana to quickly and creatively secure Action Cards, giving him a tactical advantage in duels.
