Description
Futoshi Harada, known as Frederick in some adaptations, is a young student at the You Show Duel School and a loyal friend to the protagonist, Yuya Sakaki. He is a stocky, overweight boy with spiky brown hair and orange eyes, typically dressed casually in a yellow hoodie with a red bear design on the front, orange cargo shorts held up by colorful suspenders, and practical shoes suited for Action Duels. As a junior-class duelist, he is one of the youngest and most earnest members of the school.

Futoshi’s most defining personality trait is his enthusiastic and expressive nature. He is famously known for declaring that he gets the shivers—or a similar catchphrase—whenever a duel reaches an exciting turning point, often accompanied by a distinctive full-body shiver of excitement. He is a devoted fan of Yuya and an unwavering supporter of his friends, always cheering loudly from the sidelines and believing in Yuya’s abilities even when others have doubts. Despite his generally cheerful and loyal demeanor, he can become easily distressed or panicked when danger arises, such as when he was taken hostage and nearly fell from a tower early in the story. He is also quite direct, often blurting out his thoughts or asking obvious questions, which helps highlight key moments for the other characters.

Within the story, Futoshi functions primarily as a supportive figure and a representation of the You Show Duel School’s community. He participates in the Junior division of the Maiami Championship, where he achieves his first on-screen victory against an opponent named Trevor but is subsequently defeated by the prodigy Riley Akaba, who overwhelms him with a Synchro Monster. This defeat does not dampen his spirits for long, as he quickly returns to supporting his friends. He remains a consistent presence throughout the series’ major arcs, from the chaos of the Battle Royal to the interdimensional conflicts of the Friendship Cup. When the dimensions begin to merge and the Supreme King Dragon Z-ARC appears, Futoshi witnesses the devastating duels from a distance, struggling to reconcile the monstrous dragon with the friend he knows. Like many others, he experiences a loss of memory after the final conflict but eventually regains his recollections of his dimensional travels.

Futoshi’s dueling style revolves around his Doodle or Sketch Beast deck, which focuses on straightforward beatdown tactics. His ace monster is Doodle Beast Tyranno, a powerful creature that can be summoned with a single tribute and, upon its arrival, destroys an opponent’s monster and gains half of its attack points to deal significant damage. His strategies typically center on protecting his monsters to ensure a successful Tribute Summon of his Tyranno. While effective in initial rounds, this straightforward approach proves vulnerable against more complex summoning methods like Synchro Summoning, as shown in his loss to Riley. Still, his role as a duelist and a character highlights the importance of passion and camaraderie within the competitive world of Yu-Gi-Oh Arc-V.
