Description
Hokuto Shijima is a student of the Leo Duel School, where he serves as the representative for the Xyz Summon course. As an honor student within this prestigious institution, he is considered an exceptional duelist with a win rate of approximately ninety percent in his class. Physically, Hokuto is slim and tall, with purple hair styled upwards and featuring a gold pin shaped like the Big Dipper asterism. He has blue eyes and a star-shaped mark or frame beneath his hairline on his forehead. His attire consists of a zip-up blue and purple jacket displaying his school's badge, white pants, and olive-colored shoes.

In his early appearances, Hokuto possesses a callous and almost cruel demeanor during Action Duels, showing little concern for his opponent's physical safety and timing his maneuvers to put them at a disadvantage. He harbors a significant superiority complex and a fragile sense of pride; taking even minimal damage can send him into a rage, and he is prone to sulking in a corner when his skills are questioned or his defeats are mentioned. He is highly confident in his mastery of the action field Cosmo Sanctuary, whose starry terrain he considers best suited to his abilities, and he uses his intimate knowledge of its action card drop patterns to restrict his opponents.

His primary motivation is to defend the honor of Xyz Summoning, particularly as it is taught at the Leo Duel School. He is incensed when this summoning method is misused by others and vows to prove that his school's Xyz techniques are the strongest. This drive stems from a deep-seated pride in his own skills and a belief in the superiority of his institution. His role in the story begins as an antagonist representing his school in a team-based competition against the You Show Duel School. Following his own defeat, his role expands as he becomes involved in a larger investigation alongside his peers, Masumi Kotsu and Yaiba Todo, to track down a mysterious duelist who has been attacking Leo Duel School instructors using Xyz monsters.

Hokuto shares a close, if somewhat competitive, relationship with his fellow course representatives, Masumi and Yaiba. The three frequently operate as a team, and it is within this dynamic that Hokuto's more vulnerable and comedic traits often emerge, with Masumi in particular quick to deflate his ego by pointing out his past failures. His character undergoes noticeable development after his first defeat. The once-arrogant duelist shows less arrogance and does not boast as openly as he did prior to this critical loss. His pride is effectively shattered, leading to a more subdued, though still proud, personality.

Hokuto specializes in using a Constellar-themed deck, which focuses on the rapid and repeated Xyz Summoning of powerful monsters. His signature cards are Constellar Pleiades and Constellar Ptolemy M7. His central strategy involves using the effects of these monsters to control the field by returning opponent's cards to the hand, thereby clearing the way for direct attacks while simultaneously disrupting the opponent's plays. He is also known to employ cards like Constellar Tempest to put further pressure on his opponents. In his first and most notable duel, his forty-one-match winning streak is decisively broken by the protagonist. Later, during the Maiami Championship, he falls to the duelist Serena and is sealed into a card, resulting in a default loss in the tournament.
