Description
Masumi Kotsu is a supporting character in the anime Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V. She serves as the representative for the Fusion Summon course at the Leo Institute of Dueling, also known as LDS. She is a teenage girl with a dark skin tone, shoulder-length black hair, and red eyes. Her primary deck is a Gem-Knight Deck built around Fusion Summoning, with her ace monster being Gem-Knight Master Diamond, a card she later upgrades to Gem-Knight Lady Brilliant Diamond.
Masumi possesses a direct, straightforward, and bold personality. She speaks her mind without hesitation and frequently employs mockery, though her observations are typically accurate and grounded in genuine insight rather than mere arrogance. Growing up observing her father appraise jewels, she developed an ability to detect talent and hesitation in others, a skill she demonstrates during her early duel with Yuzu Hiiragi by reading Yuzu's mental state. Despite her sharp tongue, Masumi is a caring person who values her friends and teachers deeply. She becomes frantic and determined when her instructor Professor Marco disappears, showing a strong attachment to him that suggests a possible crush, and she does not tolerate insults directed at him.
In the story, Masumi is introduced as one of the three LDS course representatives, alongside Hokuto Shijima and Yaiba Todo. She initially treats Yuya Sakaki and his friends with condescension, viewing their non-LDS style of dueling as inferior. Her first major role is a duel against Yuzu, where she attempts to break Yuzu's confidence by exploiting her hesitation. As the series progresses, Masumi participates in the Friendship Cup tournament and later becomes involved in the conflict with the Fusion Dimension. She demonstrates loyalty to her allies and a willingness to set aside rivalry when the stakes become personal. Her key relationships include a competitive friendship with Yuzu, a respectful connection with her fellow LDS representatives, and a deep concern for Professor Marco. Her notable abilities lie in her Fusion Summoning strategy, which relies on her Gem-Knight monsters to produce powerful fusion combinations, and her perceptive skill at reading opponents' emotional weaknesses. Her development moves from a haughty rival to a more cooperative and protective teammate, especially when the safety of those she cares about is threatened.
