Description
The Battle Beast, often referred to simply as BB, is a character who appears as an antagonist in the later episodes of the anime. He is a male student of Duel Academy, specifically trained by the instructor Sanders, and is considered Sanders most powerful pupil. However, his extreme and uncontrollable violent tendencies led to him being deemed defective, and he was kept imprisoned at the academy.

In terms of appearance, the Battle Beast is designed to evoke the image of a Roman gladiator combined with a wild barbarian. He is a young, tall, and very muscular man with a lean and well-built frame. He has long, reddish-brown hair that reaches his back, with two long bangs that extend down to his abdomen. He wears very little clothing, only a pair of ragged trousers or shorts, and walks barefoot, which emphasizes his brutish and feral motif. He also wears a simple necklace featuring three fangs, black wristbands, a white armband on his right bicep, and a black, gladiator-style shoulder pauldron on his left side.

The personality of the Battle Beast is defined by a blind, savage competitiveness that makes him appear almost feral. He displays no hesitation or remorse in defeating his own comrades and sealing them into cards, a process that effectively traps a person. Beyond this, he is shown to be arrogant and sadistic, seeming to revel in the fear and suffering of his opponents while acting with absolute indifference when confronted about his cruel actions. Despite his ferocity and undeniable dueling skill, he also demonstrates a cowardly streak, preferring to attack from the shadows and hide behind his trap cards when pressured. His competitiveness is a notable trait, one that other characters like Yuya Sakaki learn to exploit to draw his attacks. He deeply dislikes taking orders from Sanders and is visibly shaken by his instructor's constant pressure and threats.

His role in the story begins when Sanders initiates a Survival Duel in the ruins of Heartland City. The Battle Beast joins this brutal battle royal as a major threat to the Lancers, the series protagonists. He uses his speed and a unique terrain card called Jungle of Predators - Predator Jungle to conceal himself and hunt his targets. He swiftly and efficiently defeats and seals several of Sanders own students and members of the Lancers, including Bernie, Moon Shadow, Ted, Ethan, Emma, and Jacob. He later corners Crow Hogan and defeats him as well, attempting to destroy Crow's card before being stopped. This leads to a duel against Yuya Sakaki, Gong Strong, and eventually Jack Atlas.

The Battle Beast's key relationships are primarily defined by conflict. His relationship with his trainer, Sanders, is the most significant. Sanders created him to be the ultimate duel soldier but constantly threatens and belittles him, demanding obedience. This abusive dynamic eventually reaches a breaking point during the duel with Yuya and Jack. When Sanders threatens to seal him into a card for disobedience, the Battle Beast snaps and turns on his instructor, using his own monsters to defeat him. Another crucial relationship forms with Yuya Sakaki, who, instead of fighting with hatred, tries to understand the Battle Beast. Yuya recognizes that the Battle Beast does not truly enjoy fighting and that his savagery is a result of his harsh conditioning.

This encounter marks the beginning of his development. Throughout the duel, the Battle Beast is shown to be trembling and hesitant when ordered to be vicious, suggesting a deep internal conflict. Yuya speaks to him about the joy of dueling and the belief that duels should not be used to hurt people. In a final, unorthodox move, Yuya uses his monsters to cover the Battle Beast in paint and physically pull him out of his protective fortress, breaking down his aggressive facade. Overwhelmed by Yuya's words and actions, the Battle Beast breaks down in tears, blaming himself for the people he has hurt and expressing a desire to atone. Yuya reassures him that he can change now that his true self has returned, allowing the Battle Beast to accept his defeat and begin a path toward redemption.

In terms of notable abilities, the Battle Beast is exceptionally fast and agile, able to match the speed of Moon Shadow, a trained ninja. He is also highly adept at using his environment to conceal himself and hunt opponents. As a duelist, he uses a Gladiator Beast deck, which focuses on a strategic, hit-and-run style. The monsters in this deck can return to the deck after battle to summon other Gladiator Beasts, allowing for rapid adaptation and contact fusion, which fuses monsters without a spell card. He supports this strategy with continuous trap cards to protect his monsters and uses destruction effects in combination with cards like Pollice Verso to deal massive damage. His tactics are predatory, focusing on whittling down his prey before finishing them off.
