Description
Azalie Cait-Sith is a central figure whose tragic fate drives much of the narrative. Originally a foster sister and best friend to the protagonist Orphen, her story is one of immense talent undone by obsession and heartbreak. She and Orphen, whose real name is Krylancelo Finrandi, grew up together in an orphanage alongside her distant relative Leticia. During these early years, she acted as a maternal figure to the young Krylancelo, nurturing and tutoring him. Their latent magical abilities were eventually recognized, leading all three to be taken to the Tower of Fangs, an elite and dangerous school for sorcerers.
At the Tower of Fangs, Azalie was placed in the prestigious Childman Classroom under the master sorcerer Childman Powderfield. She quickly distinguished herself as the most powerful and prodigious student among her peers, frequently accompanying Childman on special missions concerning ancient legacies. Her personality was a complex blend of sharp intellect, fierce competitiveness, and a provocative streak that often led to explosive clashes, particularly with Leticia. Despite her formidable and sometimes intimidating exterior, she had a kind and loving side, especially in her relationship with the young Orphen.
A pivotal and tragic turn in her life occurred when her romantic feelings for her teacher, Childman, were rejected. This rejection profoundly affected her, deepening her existing obsession with gaining knowledge and power. This fixation led her down a dangerous path of secretly experimenting with forbidden magic. Her most fateful decision was to test the ancient and powerful Sword of Baltanders on herself. Unable to control the sword's immense power, the spell backfired catastrophically, transforming her into a monstrous dragon known as Bloody August.
The leadership of the Tower of Fangs, more concerned with their reputation than with rescue, declared Azalie dead and held a funeral with an empty casket. They initiated a hunt to destroy the creature, asserting that no trace of Azalie's humanity remained. For five years, as Bloody August, she terrorized regions, including attacks on the Everlasting household in her continued quest to reclaim the Sword of Baltanders. Her former teacher, Childman, eventually organized a hunting party to eliminate the dragon, a party that included Orphen. During the climactic confrontation, Azalie revealed her cunning and mastery of white magic by swapping bodies with Childman, manipulating events from within his form. When Orphen confronted her, she justified her actions as self-defense against the Tower's persecution. Though Orphen offered to restore her to her human body using the sword, he subsequently declared he never wanted to see her again.
Despite this rejection, Azalie never truly disappears from the story. She continues to track Orphen's journey through astral projection and actively manipulates events from the shadows. Her actions are driven by a complex mix of self-preservation, lingering affection for Orphen, and her own ambitious agenda. She has been known to eliminate threats to Orphen's group, such as slaughtering over sixty dog monsters that endangered them, and she later hires the dwarf duo Volcan and Dortin to assist her on her journeys. Her skills are exceptional, demonstrating mastery over both black and white magic. She specializes in mental and spiritual attacks, including casting powerful illusions, performing soul transference to swap bodies, and using astral projection for remote observation and mind control. Her proficiency in physical combat is also notable, allowing her to match opponents single-handedly. Throughout her schemes, she maintains a survivalist philosophy forged during her years as a fugitive, justifying her often violent and manipulative actions as necessary. Azalie remains a deeply influential figure, a tragic sorceress whose quest for power and love transformed her into a monster, yet whose intelligence and will continue to shape the world around her.
