Description
Mihoshi Kuramitsu is a Galaxy Police detective first class who becomes one of the central figures in the Tenchi Universe storyline. She belongs to the powerful Kuramitsu family, a notable lineage within the Seniwa empire, and her grandfather serves as the commissioner general of the Galaxy Police. Despite her privileged background, she is assigned to patrol a quiet sector of space that includes Earth, largely because her impressive arrest record is accompanied by an equally extensive record of accidental property damage.

On the surface, Mihoshi appears to be a classic airhead: she is clumsy, scatterbrained, and prone to moments of forgetfulness that can derail even simple tasks. She often loses track of what she is doing, misplaces important items, and struggles to recall basic Galaxy Police regulations at critical moments. Her bumbling nature frequently puts her at odds with her more serious partner Kiyone, who must constantly correct and manage Mihoshi's mistakes. However, this exterior masks a genuinely capable officer who has achieved the rank of detective first class through legitimate success. She is deeply devoted to her duties as a Galaxy Police officer and takes her responsibility to uphold the law seriously, even if her methods are chaotic.

One of Mihoshi's most defining traits is her extraordinary luck, which borders on the supernatural. She has a tendency to stumble into impossible situations and emerge victorious through sheer fortune, such as accidentally freeing Washu from a sealed dimensional prison without understanding how she did it. This luck is linked to her distant relation to Washu, though Mihoshi herself is largely unaware of the mechanisms behind her improbable successes. She is also remarkably resilient, often surviving situations that should be dangerous or fatal.

Mihoshi is perpetually optimistic and enthusiastic, approaching life with a sunny disposition that rarely wavers. She looks for the bright side in any situation and is almost always smiling, even when she has caused a major problem. She is eager to help those around her and willingly takes on household chores at the Masaki residence, often outperforming Ryoko and Ayeka in routine tasks. Her desire to be friendly and useful is genuine, even when her efforts create more work for others.

Her role in the story begins when she crashes her spaceship on Earth while pursuing the criminal Kagato. She soon joins the household of Tenchi Masaki, creating an unusual dynamic where a Galaxy Police officer lives under the same roof as Ryoko, a wanted space pirate. Over time, Mihoshi largely forgets that Ryoko is a criminal and treats her as a friend and roommate. She inadvertently summons Ayeka to Earth while trying to call for backup, setting in motion many of the series' key events.

In terms of relationships, Mihoshi has a particularly complex dynamic with Kiyone, her long-suffering partner. Kiyone frequently blames Mihoshi for their problems and complains about her incompetence, yet Mihoshi remains deeply loyal, always defending Kiyone to others and putting their friendship first. She also has a mild romantic interest in Tenchi, though it is less intense than the feelings of Ryoko or Ayeka. Her interactions with Washu are notable because Washu respects Mihoshi's unique causality-bending abilities and has repeatedly referred to her as the only member of the household who could defeat her.

Mihoshi is also surprisingly perceptive beneath her oblivious surface. She displays moments of sharp insight into the people around her, such as correctly identifying Ayeka's fears about marriage or recognizing that Ryoko is a good person underneath her tough exterior. She is not tactful, and her unfiltered observations sometimes hit uncomfortably close to home for those she comments on, but her intentions are never malicious.

Her notable abilities include access to various Galaxy Police equipment, such as a battle suit, a blaster, and her personal spaceship Yukinojyo, which has its own artificial intelligence. She is also a skilled writer of extremely detailed and thorough reports, though they are so dense and cluttered that they often require summarization before they can be officially filed. Her most significant ability is her seemingly supernatural luck, which allows her to bypass barriers, enter impossible locations, and survive situations that should be beyond her capability, all without understanding how she does it.
