Description
Eri Natsuno is one of the two teenage girls transported from modern-day Japan to a mysterious and troubled parallel world. She is sixteen years old and serves as a counterbalance to her companion, Yuko Miyabe. Physically, Eri is depicted as a teenager with brown eyes and black hair that falls to her neck, often styled with a notable hair ribbon.
In terms of personality, Eri is characterized as sensitive, thoughtful, and reserved. She is the complete opposite of the more outspoken and abrasive Yuko. Eri is often hesitant to speak her mind, as she is deeply afraid of hurting the feelings of others. While Yuko remains largely detached and uninterested in the conflicts of the strange new world, Eri demonstrates a strong sense of empathy and concern for the miniature inhabitants who see the two girls as their "Great Protectors." Her core motivation stems from her ideology that, since they may be trapped in this world forever, they have a responsibility to use their presence to help the people suffering from the ongoing war. She actively does her best to assist them, in contrast to Yuko who is reluctant to get involved.
Eri's role in the story is that of a reluctant but caring figure caught in a political and military conflict not her own. The inhabitants of this world, particularly the warriors from a village who befriend them, look to her and Yuko as saviors. However, the two girls struggle to grasp the true gravity and danger of the little people's war, often perceiving the situation as something less than real due to the fantastical circumstances. While Yuko reacts with denial and frustration, Eri shows a greater willingness to accept their situation and engage with the people around her. A key aspect of her character is revealed through her hobby of writing fantasy stories; throughout her journey in the parallel world, she channels her experiences into writing a narrative based directly on her own adventures.
Her key relationships are primarily defined by her dynamic with Yuko. They act as a classic example of contrasting personalities, with Yuko as the "red oni" or tomboy to Eri's "blue oni" and girly girl. Eri's sensitivity and Yuko's harshness frequently put them at odds in terms of how to respond to their predicament. Eri also builds a bond of trust with the small native people who protect and guide them, as she is the one who shows genuine concern for their welfare. Throughout the narrative, Eri experiences subtle development. While she begins as timid and uncertain, her time in the other world reinforces her resilience and her capacity for compassion, even when faced with a reality she cannot fully control. Notably, she possesses a hidden reserve of strength; despite her gentle nature, there are moments where she can be pushed too far, famously exhibiting "berserker tears" in a critical episode. Eri does not possess any overt supernatural powers, but her perceived status as a "Great Protector" and her physical size relative to the tiny natives make her an unwitting political tool that various factions lust for to rally people to their side.
