Description
Speed-o'-Sound Sonic, known in Japanese as Onsoku no Sonic, is a recurring character in the anime One Punch Man. He is a freelance ninja who first appears as a hired bodyguard and later becomes one of the most persistent challengers in the story, with his role shifting over time between outright villain and occasional anti-hero. He is a former student of the Ninja Village, where he was part of the 44th Graduation Class, a group remembered for having been effectively wiped out. His upbringing in that harsh institution shaped him into a highly disciplined but ruthless fighter. While training in the wilderness one night with a fellow graduate, he revealed that his long-term ambition was to become the strongest ninja and to reform the village so that future trainees could have more freedom.
In appearance, Sonic is a thin, youthful-looking man with a slender build that belies his physical power. He has medium-length black hair tied into a topknot and two purple markings under his eyes. He typically wears a tight black outfit with metal plating on his chest, shoulders, forearms, and shins, along with a long purple scarf, and he carries a ninjato, kunai, and shuriken. In later appearances he sometimes wears plain black street clothes.
Personality-wise, Sonic presents a calm and composed exterior, but he is driven by an intense love of combat. He openly admits to a bad habit of seeking out strong opponents, and he reacts with almost childlike excitement when he encounters someone who can challenge him. He is proud, arrogant, and quick to act, as shown when he attacked Saitama on their first meeting without waiting for an explanation. At the same time, he is a calculating and experienced ninja who takes his training seriously and is willing to dedicate himself fully to improving his skills.
His central motivation is his rivalry with Saitama. After being defeated in their first encounter, Sonic becomes obsessed with proving himself superior and devotes much of his time to developing new techniques that might allow him to win a rematch. He also values the thrill of battle, feeling bloodlust toward weaker opponents and enjoyment from competing against those stronger than himself. Within the world of the series, he is classified as a dangerous S-class criminal and a high-value capture target, yet he operates on his own terms rather than as part of any larger organization.
His role in the story begins when he is hired by the crime boss Zeniru as a bodyguard against the Paradise Group. During that assignment he meets Saitama, and their confrontation sets the pattern for the rest of his appearances: he challenges Saitama, is effortlessly outmatched, and returns later with renewed determination and a new technique. Because he cannot accept that Saitama's strength is simply beyond his reach, he keeps returning, which makes him one of the few characters who repeatedly seeks out the main character as an opponent.
The most significant relationship in his life is his rivalry with Saitama, whom he regards as his eternal rival. Although their encounters are one-sided in terms of power, the dynamic carries a measure of mutual recognition, and Sonic shows a grudging respect for Saitama even as he schemes to defeat him. His former employer Zeniru represents his earlier life as a hired mercenary, a role he abandons as his personal goal takes over. He also shares a meaningful connection with Flashy Flash, a fellow survivor of the Ninja Village's 44th Graduation Class; their common background links them, and their conversations reveal his deeper hopes for changing the ninja world.
Over the course of the story, Sonic develops from a simple hired villain into a more complex figure. He experiences repeated defeats and is forced to confront the reality that he often underestimates his opponents, yet he channels those failures into intense training. His skills evolve steadily, and although he never manages to surpass Saitama, his persistence and growth give him a degree of respect that his early appearances did not suggest.
In terms of abilities, Sonic is one of the fastest characters in the series. He can move at speeds near or beyond the speed of sound, leaving multiple afterimages in his wake and generating shockwaves simply from accelerating. He is a master of ninjutsu with superb stealth, agility, and reflexes, and he combines his speed with precision strikes and a variety of ninja tools. His techniques include rapid sword attacks and low, charging lunges that make him nearly impossible to track, and he continually refines his arsenal in search of an attack that can land on Saitama. While his speed makes him a formidable opponent for most fighters, his physical strength remains far below the level of the series' most powerful characters, which is why his clashes with Saitama end so one-sidedly.
