Description
Otoha Kohashi is a supporting character in the anime Wakaba Girl, where she is the mother of the protagonist Wakaba Kohashi and of Wakaba's older sister, Yuzuha Kohashi. In the original manga this character was not given a name; the name Otoha was created for the anime adaptation. She is married to the Kohashi family patriarch, who is frequently away from home because of his work, and this leaves Otoha to manage the household and raise the two daughters largely on her own.
She is presented as a notably beautiful woman with dark ochre hair and brown eyes, and her youthful appearance can make her look more like Yuzuha's older sister than her mother. In terms of personality, she comes across as a caring and conscientious parent. She maintains a curfew for Wakaba and initially refuses to let her attend a summer festival with her friends, although she is eventually persuaded to allow it, showing both a protective side and a willingness to trust others when she feels her daughter is in good hands. A more sentimental aspect of her character appears when she is deeply moved by Wakaba's wish to share her joyful experiences with her late grandmother.
Her role in the story is that of a supportive family figure rather than a driver of the plot. She appears in scenes connected to Wakaba's home life, and her presence mainly serves to illustrate the warm but watchful environment of the Kohashi household. Her key relationships are with her two daughters, and her care for their wellbeing is a consistent trait. Because she raises her children while her husband is away, she is shown as someone who carries much of the family responsibility on her own.
Her development is limited in scope. Instead of undergoing a personal arc, she is revealed through small moments, such as relenting about the festival and being touched by Wakaba's thoughts about her grandmother, which expose a gentle and emotional nature beneath her more careful and disciplined manner. No notable special abilities are depicted for her; her characterization is built entirely around her role as a mother and homemaker within a wealthy family.
