Description
Claire Rouge, originally born Claire Elstein, is a central character and the leader of Team Scarlet at the Areishia Spirit Academy. She is an elementalist who has formed a contract with a high-level flame spirit named Scarlet, a spirit that has served her noble family for generations. In its materialized form, Scarlet often appears as a small, red-furred cat, but it can transform into Claire's elemental waffe, a powerful whip called Flametongue.
Claire hails from the prestigious Elstein ducal family, which served the Ordesia Empire's royal family since the empire's founding. Her life changed drastically four years prior to the story's beginning when her elder sister, Rubia Elstein, committed a grave betrayal. Rubia, who served as the queen under the Fire Elemental Lord, stole the most powerful flame spirit, Laevateinn, and disappeared. In retaliation, the enraged Fire Elemental Lord burned the Elstein territory, leading to the family's ruin. Their lands were seized, and Claire's parents were imprisoned. Although Claire was not sent to prison, she was expected to relinquish her own spirit, Scarlet, to the imperial family. She was saved from this fate by Greyworth, the headmistress of Areishia Spirit Academy, who recognized her potential. Accepting Greyworth's offer, Claire discarded her family name and enrolled at the academy under the alias Claire Rouge, determined to forge her own path.
In terms of personality, Claire is known for being impulsive, hot-tempered, and easily flustered, often jumping to conclusions based on the situation at hand. Her proud and high-pressure demeanor is, in many ways, a defense mechanism developed from a painful past. Due to her sister's reputation as a traitor, often called the Calamity Queen, Claire was alienated and bullied by other students, leading to a lonely and misunderstood childhood. Beneath this prickly exterior, however, she is a deeply caring and loyal individual. Despite her short fuse, she is also mysteriously sharp and well-versed in combat tactics and magical theory, earning her a reputation as a gifted student, albeit one placed in the infamous Raven Class for problem students.
Claire's primary motivation is to grow stronger andwin the Blade Dance, a grand elementalist tournament. Her deepest wish is to use the prize, a single wish granted to the victor, to find her sister Rubia and demand the truth behind her betrayal. This singular goal drives her relentless pursuit of power and explains her initial desperation to form a contract with a powerful spirit. Her role in the story is established from the very beginning when she has a fateful and embarrassing first encounter with the series' protagonist, Kamito Kazehaya, while bathing in a forest pond. After he inadvertently witnesses her naked, she attacks him, but their confrontation is interrupted when they are forced to work together to subdue a rampaging spirit. This leads to their uneasy partnership, and she eventually becomes the de facto leader of their team, often clashing with Kamito while also being one of the few people who learns his secret identity as the legendary former champion Ren Ashbell.
Key relationships define much of her character arc. Her dynamic with Kamito is a classic contentious partnership, with her often losing her temper at his perceived perversions or his interactions with other girls, while also relying on his strength and strategic insight. She also shares a competitive friendship with Rinslet Laurenfrost, a fellow noble and ice-elementalist, with whom she frequently bickers, often about Claire's insecurities regarding her small stature and flat chest. Despite their rivalrous banter, they are close teammates and allies.
Throughout the series, Claire undergoes significant development. Initially depicted as a prideful but insecure girl with an unhealthy obsession with acquiring a powerful contracted spirit, she learns to trust her teammates and value cooperation over individual strength. A major turning point occurs when she is forced to confront the true potential of her own spirit, Scarlet. During a crucial battle, it is revealed that Scarlet's power was sealed, and by calling its true name, Ortlinde, the spirit transforms from a cat form into a powerful girl who wields a massive crimson scythe. This unlock represents Claire's growth in accepting her own inherited legacy rather than seeking power elsewhere.
Claire is a formidable fire magic user, capable of casting high-level spells such as basic Fireballs, Fire Walls, and creating flaming projectiles and explosives. Her signature ability is End of Vermilion, also known as the Flame-Burning-Flame, a legendary power of the Elstein family. This extraordinary flame does not simply burn but can consume and destroy other flames, an otherwise impossible phenomenon. She can channel this power through her whip, Flametongue, which is versatile enough to bind, slice, and attack at both close and long range. She is also a capable strategist, able to quickly analyze combat situations and devise effective plans for her team. Her development culminates in acquiring the Flames of Elstein passive magic, which stabilizes her power and makes her fire attacks even stronger.
