Description
Kazehaya Kamito is the central protagonist of the Blade Dance of the Elementalers series. He is a sixteen-year-old young man who stands as a unique figure in his world, being one of the only known male elementalists, individuals capable of contracting with spirits. His very existence defies the established norm that only pure maidens can wield such power. Kamito has medium-length dark hair and, in the present story, often wears a black glove on his left hand to conceal a spirit seal. His appearance is notable for being delicate enough that he can convincingly pass as a girl, a trait that becomes central to his past.

Kamito’s background is rooted in a dark and traumatic childhood. He was orphaned and raised from a young age in a place called the Instructional School, a facility that trained children as emotionless assassins for a cult seeking to resurrect the Demon King. It was during this time that he first met and partnered with the dark spirit Restia Ashdoll. Unlike his harsh instructors, Restia taught Kamito about emotions, joy, and sorrow, becoming his first contracted spirit and the most important person in his life. When the school was destroyed, Kamito seized the chance to escape, taking with him the ring that sealed Restia away. His primary goal became freeing her, which led him to accept a mission to assassinate Greyworth Ciel Mais, the continent's most powerful elementalist known as the Dusk Witch. The attempt failed, but instead of killing him, Greyworth took Kamito in as her servant. Under her tutelage, he was forced to wear a maid's uniform to hide his identity and was trained in a new style of combat, the Absolute Blade Arts. To participate in the Blade Dance, a grand tournament for elementalists, Greyworth had him disguise himself as a girl named Ren Ashbell. At the age of thirteen, under this alias, he won the competition and was hailed as the Strongest Blade Dancer. However, his victory came at a great personal cost: he lost Restia, who disappeared after he made a wish to the Spirit Kings. For the next three years, he wandered the land in search of her.

In terms of personality, Kamito is defined by a stark contrast between his grim upbringing and his fundamental nature. While the Instructional School tried to purge all emotion from him, his time with Restia cultivated a kind and selfless heart. He is not a perverted or dense protagonist; rather, he is portrayed as a competent and level-headed individual who is often exasperated by the antics of the girls around him. Due to a series of misunderstandings and exaggerated rumors spread by the sheltered noble girls at the academy, he has gained an undeserved reputation as the "Demon King of the Night" or a "perverted beast". In reality, he is quite tolerant and patient, often bearing these false accusations without much complaint. He is also known to be somewhat clueless about romance and slow to recognize the romantic feelings others have for him, though there are hints he may be more aware than he lets on. He has a teasing side, particularly towards Claire Rouge, and enjoys provoking reactions from his friends.

Kamito’s main motivation throughout the story is his search for Restia Ashdoll, his original spirit and first love. Greyworth lures him to Areishia Spirit Academy by providing a clue that Restia may still be alive, and in exchange for this information, Kamito agrees to form a team and participate in the Blade Dance once more. His role in the story is that of a reluctant hero and the leader of Team Scarlet. He is the strategic and physical core of the group, using his immense combat experience to guide and protect his teammates. His presence at the all-female academy serves as a catalyst for change, challenging the world’s preconceived notions about elementalists.

His key relationships form the emotional core of the series. His most significant bond is with Restia Ashdoll, the dark spirit who gave him his humanity. The entire plot is driven by his desire to be reunited with her. After losing Restia, he forms a new contract with the sword spirit Terminus Est, also known as the Demon Slayer, who becomes his primary partner in battle. Despite her emotionless demeanor, he is very protective of her. At the academy, he builds a team with Claire Rouge, a fiery noble who first summoned him to the school. Their relationship is initially volatile but grows into a close, teasing friendship, with Claire being the first girl he kisses. He is also close with Ellis Fahrengart, a knight who initially despises him as a male intruder but later develops strong feelings, and with Rinslet Laurenfrost and Fianna Ray Ordesia, each of whom becomes a vital part of his team and harbors romantic affection for him. His mentor, Greyworth Ciel Mais, serves as a manipulative yet caring parental figure who trained him in his signature sword techniques.

Throughout the story, Kamito undergoes significant development. He begins as a lone wanderer, having lost his power and purpose after Restia’s disappearance. As he enrolls in the academy and reluctantly works with others, he gradually rediscovers his strength and learns to trust and rely on comrades. He starts the series unable to use his full power, but through numerous battles to protect his new friends, he slowly regains the formidable abilities he possessed as Ren Ashbell. His character arc is about moving from a solitary, driven existence to embracing the bonds of friendship and teamwork.

Kamito's notable abilities are vast, stemming from his dual training as an assassin and a formal elementalist. He is an extraordinarily skilled swordsman who practices the Absolute Blade Arts, or "Zettou Ken," a style taught to him by Greyworth that is devastatingly effective against other elementalists. His arsenal includes techniques like "Metsujin Shou" for blocking projectiles, "Hien Souga" for rapid slashes, and "Rekka Senpu" for countering fire spirits. From his assassin training, he uses high-speed movement techniques like "Kageyumi" (Shadow Shot) and stealth techniques such as "Mizugakure" (Water Concealment). His ultimate technique is the final form of the Absolute Blade Arts, Tenku Zanshou (Heaven-Severing Flash), a devastating secret art. As an elementalist, he can contract with multiple powerful spirits. Using Est, he materializes the holy demon-slaying sword. When reunited with Restia, he wields the Vorpal Sword, a demonic blade of darkness. His true potential is realized when he wields both spirits simultaneously, using the dual blades to unleash an even more powerful version of his final attack. His unique nature as a male elementalist also makes him the rightful successor to the power of the Demon King Solomon.
