Description
The Honoka sisters, often referred to collectively as the Honoka Series in the context of the anime Knights of Sidonia: Battle for Planet Nine, are a group of nearly identical clone pilots. They were created by Doctor Yure Shinatose as part of a human cloning project specifically designed to produce combat personnel for the ongoing war against the alien Gauna. As a result of this artificial origin, the sisters are raised in accelerated growth tanks using artificial amniotic fluid, making them only five years old at the time of their introduction despite possessing the bodies of young adults.

Personality-wise, while the sisters share the same appearance, they exhibit distinct individual traits. Honoka En and Honoka Ren are the most prominently featured members of the series. En displays a tsundere-like personality, often reacting physically and defensively in social situations, such as when she elbows protagonist Nagate Tanikaze for accidentally intruding on her. Despite this exterior, she develops a clear romantic interest in Nagate, which manifests as jealousy when she sees him with Tsumugi Shiraui. Ren, in contrast, is more outgoing and socially adept, possessing a higher affinity for others and a greater willingness to engage in conversation. She is known for her bold and spirited actions, such as entering a shower area despite warnings of a monster. Both En and Ren share a mutual crush on Nagate, though neither is the primary focus of the romantic narrative.

The primary motivation for the Honoka sisters is their engineered purpose. They explicitly state that they were born to fight the Gauna. This sense of duty drives them to serve as Garde pilots for the Sidonia. Their role in the story is that of supporting combatants. They are highly capable soldiers who fill the ranks of the Sidonia's defense force, often appearing in the background of battle sequences or as part of the larger pilot roster. Combat is central to their identity, and they are treated as expendable assets to a certain degree, with their physical abilities and training optimized for warfare.

Key relationships within the group are complex due to their shared origin. There is a clear bond between En and Ren, who often appear together and act as confidants for one another. They also show care for their younger sister, Honoka Shou, becoming highly agitated when she is in danger. Their relationship with Nagate Tanikaze is significant, as he is one of the few outsiders they interact with regularly. Initially, there is conflict due to misunderstandings involving accidental intrusions, but this eventually evolves into a mutual respect and unspoken affection from the sisters toward him.

Character development for individual sisters varies. En begins as a highly capable but comatose pilot after suffering severe injuries in battle. Upon regaining consciousness, she struggles with feelings of guilt regarding her injuries and a hunger resulting from her long period of unconsciousness. Her interactions with Nagate slowly shift from violent retribution to shyness and eventual romantic longing. Ren remains a consistent support figure, but her composure is notably shaken when she develops feelings for Nagate, leading to moments of distraction and melancholy. Tragically, other sisters like Honoka Hou are killed in action, demonstrating the lethal reality of their existence. Honoka Shou experiences a particularly horrific fate, as she is absorbed by a Gauna. Her body is replicated so perfectly by the alien that it retains her memories and personality, forcing the crew to confront a doppelganger that ultimately self-destructs upon realizing its true nature.

The Honoka sisters possess notable abilities far beyond those of a standard human. Thanks to their genetic engineering, they have exceptional overall physical capabilities. They can leap tens of meters in a single bound, withstand impacts that would be lethal to others, and possess superhuman strength, as demonstrated when one sister kicks a kotatsu (a heated table) hundreds of meters. This physical prowess makes them elite Garde pilots, and their skills are reflected in high rankings within piloting simulators, where they frequently occupy the top positions. Their physical resilience is such that Nagate, who has healing abilities, notes that a regular person would have died from the beatings he receives from them. Their primary purpose remains combat, and they represent the pinnacle of the Sidonia's bio-engineered soldier program.
