Description
Ochiai is a scientist and one of the founding members of the Immortal Ship Committee, the hidden governing body of the generation ship Sidonia. Around seven centuries before the main events of the story, he took part in the survey of an alien structure where the mold-like substance capable of destroying Gauna was discovered, a breakthrough that allowed humanity to fight back against the creatures. By that time he had already replaced much of his body with cybernetic parts, and over the following centuries he continued to modify himself while devoting his life to the study of the Gauna. He is remembered as the researcher who came closest to understanding the Gauna in Sidonia's history.
His long fascination gradually became an obsession with transcending the human species. He came to view humanity's reliance on fixed biological forms and the concept of species as inefficient, and he sought to create a fusion individual, a being combining human and Gauna traits, as a step toward what he considered an ultimate form of life and a personal rebirth. About one hundred years before the main story, during the Fourth Gauna Defense War, he acted on this ambition by launching his own fusion individual and, on his own authority, discarding all of Sidonia's Kabizashi spears outside the ship. The loss of those weapons allowed two Gauna to break into Sidonia, killing ninety-nine percent of the population. His fusion individual went out of control, he was captured, and he was officially executed.
Before his arrest, he secretly preserved a copy of his consciousness in his sealed laboratory in the form of microscopic artificial life forms called Sidonia bloodworms. His knowledge was instead stored in a large auxiliary brain guarded by the Immortal Ship Committee, and his original brain was later transplanted into a clone with its memories erased. This clone serves as Captain Kobayashi's personal assistant and agent in the main storyline, outwardly cooperative but carrying hints of the original's character.
When Kunato Norio, the heir of the Kunato corporation, breaks into the sealed laboratory, the bloodworms transfer Ochiai's consciousness into his body. Working from inside Sidonia's power structure under Kunato's identity, Ochiai uses the younger man's position as head of a major weapons developer to secretly drive the creation of new fusion individuals, including Tsumugi Shiraui, while preparing a more ambitious vessel for his own mind. His goal remains what it was a century earlier: placing his consciousness into a perfected fusion body and leaving the limits of humanity behind.
In personality, Ochiai is cold, calculating, and ruthlessly rational, treating the Gauna as objects of study and near-worship rather than as enemies. He is firmly confident in his own intellectual superiority and, despite centuries of experience, tends to underestimate the people around him, a pattern that repeats across his appearances. He is also shown as somewhat vain and casually self-important, with a manner that occasionally undercuts his menace. He retains a degree of concern for certain old comrades, notably the scientist Hiyama Lala, whose life-support suit he designed.
His relationships are largely defined by exploitation and rivalry. Captain Kobayashi is a former comrade and, through the clone, his nominal superior, but he ultimately uses her and the committee rather than truly serving them. Saito Hiroki is the comrade who sensed his abnormality earliest and the one who captured him after the great catastrophe. Nagate Tanikaze reminds him of Hiroki and becomes the person he consistently fails to account for. Kunato Norio is his victim and host, his body and social standing used as tools, while his own consciousness is pushed aside. His creations, Tsumugi and the later fusion individual Kanata, embody his ambition to merge human and Gauna biology into something new.
