TV-Series
Description
Haneru Tobitatsu is the main protagonist of the series and a middle school student who lives and breathes dance. He is a very short boy with slightly tanned skin, honey-golden pupils, and notably long eyelashes. His dark and light brown hair sticks out from under a yellow backwards cap, tied into a small ponytail. His distinctive outfit includes an off-the-shoulder red shirt with a long right sleeve, revealing a black tank top underneath, paired with blue jean shorts and white, orange, and yellow high-top shoes. He often has a temporary tattoo of the Jey symbol on his left cheek and wears a single burgundy fingerless glove on his left hand.
Haneru is best described as hot-headed, spontaneous, and full of confidence, sometimes to the point of arrogance. He is a bright and energetic boy who acts on impulse and is very clear about his feelings, though this can make him quick to judge or a little oblivious to the emotions of others. Despite occasionally being naive, he genuinely tries his best to consider the people around him. He is famously insecure about his short stature, being the shortest in his class, but compensates with an unshakable confidence in his jumping ability. He harbors a deep, passionate love for dancing and looks up to his idol, Jey, as an ideal. While he may lack academic focus, he is exceptionally hardworking when it comes to pursuing his dreams.
His primary motivation is his love for dance and his dream to one day share the stage with his idol, Jey El. He begins the story practicing his moves alone outside a memorial hall, driven purely by his passion. When he discovers that Kanon Otosaki, a shy girl who practices at the same location, is actually the famous online dancer Rhythm, he becomes determined to team up with her, marking the start of his journey into the world of street dance. His role in the story is as the heart and catalyst of the group, eventually helping to form the dance team Tribe Cool Crew alongside Kanon, Kumonosuke, Mizuki, and Yuzuru.
Haneru shares a significant and evolving friendship with Kanon Otosaki. While Kanon is initially shy and lacks confidence, Haneru constantly encourages her to break out of her shell, and their bond deepens over time. His relationship with Sakagami Kumonosuke, or Kumo, is a competitive one. As two hot-headed and arrogant individuals, their personalities frequently clash, and Haneru vows to one day beat Kumo. However, this rivalry gradually transforms into mutual respect, and Haneru comes to look up to Kumo as a leader. Mizuki Mashiro acts as a caring older sister figure within the team, often stopping Haneru and Kumo from fighting and scolding them when necessary. He gets along well with Yuzuru Tenpoin, whom he considers a funny partner in mischief, sharing a similarly wild imagination. In contrast, he has a more adversarial relationship with Yuji Shishido, as their personalities clash, leading to frequent arguments and a heated rivalry on the dance floor.
Outside of the dance crew, his best friend and childhood friend is Hiroto. They grew up playing basketball together, and Hiroto initially felt left behind when Haneru dedicated himself to dance. However, Haneru never abandoned his connection to basketball, and they eventually reconcile, even recreating a special move called the Galaxy Walk together. Another supportive childhood friend is Koji, who shares Haneru's love for Jey El and remains enthusiastically supportive of his dancing career.
Throughout the series, Haneru learns to temper his impulsive nature and think more about others. While he starts as a lone dancer, his journey is one of discovering the joy and strength found in teamwork and friendship. He learns to channel his natural talent and hot-headed energy into a force that brings his crew together rather than driving them apart. His development is marked by his growing respect for his rivals and his ability to encourage and inspire those around him, particularly Kanon.
Haneru's most notable ability is his incredible jumping and agility, which he incorporates into a dance style heavily inspired by parkour. His exceptional jumping power allows him to perform bold, impactful moves that capture the attention of viewers. Specific techniques associated with him include Wall Run, Wall Jump, and Spin Jump, which showcase his athleticism and gravity-defying skills. He is also capable of performing complex moves like the Galaxy Walk, though he initially does so unconsciously and requires help from his friend Hiroto to recreate it deliberately. His entire dance philosophy is built on the joy of movement, famously expressing that if everyone loves Jey, they should just dance without overcomplicating things.
