Description
Ariella Lu is a fifteen-year-old student with the seat number five in the Brunnhilde classroom. She was born on September 27th and hails from a politically unstable major country in the Middle East. Having witnessed countless partings and deaths throughout her life, she has developed a personality that is straightforward, boyish, and places great value on efficiency and practicality.
Ariella's deep-seated motivations stem from a profound loss. Someone important to her died, and their soul was subsequently devoured by the Yellow Dragon, Hraesvelgr. This event ignited a fierce hatred within her for the dragon, which she despises for leaving nothing of the dead. Before her abilities as a D awakened, she was a member of a dragon-rejecting organization where she trained in martial arts. However, after her powers manifested, she was betrayed by this very group and sold to Ren Miyazawa's father.
Her role within the story is complex and evolves significantly. Initially presented as a classmate and ally, Ariella is later revealed to be a spy for the organization NIFL. She harbors a unique and dangerous secret: inside her body are sealed the discarded fragments of the eighth power, the dragon Fafnir. Due to the nature of this power, she instinctively fears holding weapons, as it would make it too easy for her to kill. Consequently, her fictional armament is a shield-type gauntlet known as the Aegis, or Fang Shield.
A key relationship in her life is with Ren Miyazawa, who becomes her adoptive younger sister after being sold into the family. While grateful to Ren's father for taking her in, she disapproves of his neglectful attitude toward his own daughter. Her most pivotal relationship is with the protagonist, Yuu Mononobe. After being forced to consume a drug that activated her dormant Fafnir factor, she lost her sense of self and confronted Yuu in battle. During the fight, Yuu touched her, causing their dragon marks to resonate. This event saved her from her rampage and forged a deep, fateful bond between them, making her his "same kind" or partner, and they share the burden of the Fafnir factor.
Ariella's character development is centered on her journey from a secretive antagonist to a trusted comrade. Her life had been defined by a sense of being a tool and a spy, burdened by her violent past and the destructive power within her. Her defeat and salvation at Yuu's hands allow her to shed her false identity and confront her past. She eventually accepts her power and place among the group, becoming a member of the special squad Sleipnir. In terms of notable abilities, Ariella is a highly skilled hand-to-hand combatant thanks to her early training. Her primary ability as a D is the generation and manipulation of dark matter, which she uses to manifest her defensive fictional armament, the Aegis. After becoming Yuu's companion, she also gains access to other powerful authorities, including the causality-manipulating Code Lost.
