Description
Havia Winchell is a central figure in the military science fiction story Heavy Object. He is a seventeen-year-old soldier serving in the Legitimacy Kingdom's 37th Mobile Maintenance Battalion, where he holds the rank of Private First Class. As a member of the prestigious and affluent Winchell noble family, Havia is the eldest son with numerous younger siblings. His decision to join the military is not born from pure patriotism but from a specific family obligation; he must fulfill a term of service to gain the necessary experience and prove himself a worthy heir to claim his inheritance.

On the surface, Havia displays a personality that contrasts sharply with his aristocratic upbringing. He is often described as a brash delinquent soldier, known for his loud complaints and a pronounced sense of self-preservation. He frequently tries to avoid dangerous confrontations and is openly cowardly, always looking for the safest route through any situation. This behavior is part of his initial plan to acquire only the easiest achievements during his career. Despite this, he can act calmly in the heat of the moment and possesses a high degree of tactical sense when required. While he often appears selfish, there is a clear line he will not cross, as he is willing to risk his life to protect innocent people. He also shows a respectful side to certain individuals, like the Object pilot Milinda Brantini, which stands out from his otherwise rough demeanor.

A critical and deeper motivation for Havia's military service is tied to a romantic engagement. He is betrothed to the heiress of the Vanderbilt family, a house that is a bitter rival to the Winchells. Both families strongly oppose the union. Havia is in the army to earn the right to lead his family, which would grant him the authority and standing to marry her and finally end the long-standing feud. He could abandon this difficult path at any time and live a safe, comfortable life as a noble, but he refuses to give up on his goal despite the extreme danger of regularly confronting Objects on foot.

Within the 37th Mobile Maintenance Battalion, Havia's primary role is as a frontline soldier and the closest partner of Quenser Barbotage, a student studying Object design. While originally assigned duties as a radar analyst, his role quickly evolves, and he becomes part of a legendary duo with Quenser. Together, they achieve the unprecedented feat of destroying an Object without the use of another Object or nuclear weapons, an act that turns them into unlikely heroes and throws them into a series of harrowing suicide missions. This partnership is central to his story; Quenser often acts as the idea-driven strategist with unusual tactics, while Havia provides the practical, pessimistic voice of reason and the crucial combat skills to execute their dangerous plans. Their constant disobedience and disorderly conduct frequently earn them the ire of their superior officer, Froleytia Capistrano, for whom Havia harbors a noticeable but poorly received attraction.

His character develops through these shared experiences. While initially seeking an easy path, his repeated success alongside Quenser forces him into a more active and courageous role than he would prefer. He learns to coordinate effectively under immense pressure, channeling his cowardice into a sharp survival instinct that helps him navigate the most tense situations. His cynical complaints become a familiar counterpoint to Quenser's more reckless optimism, but his repeated willingness to follow through on the plans demonstrates a core loyalty and reliability that defines his actions.

Havia is well-trained for his hazardous role. He is highly proficient with handguns and is typically equipped with a multi-attachment assault rifle. His gear also includes optic scopes, infrared cameras, a microphone for capturing enemy audio, a military knife, and a single-use portable anti-tank missile, making him a well-equipped infantry soldier capable of supporting his partner in their unconventional guerrilla-style attacks against massive war machines.
