Description
Doratan, also known as Dora-tan, is a supporting character who holds the position of the Dragon Eto-shin, representing the Chinese zodiac sign of the Dragon with the rank of five. As one of the twelve Zodiac Gods, she is a mythical being considered to possess a high degree of divine power.
In terms of appearance, Doratan is a tall young woman standing at 170 cm, with a slender build and teal eyes behind circular glasses. She has straight, light blue hair styled into two short ponytails that rest on her shoulders, secured with white hair clips. Her zodiac nature is reflected in her physical features, which include deer-like horns protruding from her head and a lizard-like tail. Her attire typically consists of a dark blue-green skirt with yellow floral embroidery, a green kimono worn underneath, and light brown heeled shoes.
Doratan is characterized by her kind, friendly, and approachable demeanor, often giving off an aura of warmth. She is portrayed as having some of the most genuine and real emotions among the Zodiac Girls, and she is known to care deeply for others. Despite her generally maternal and gentle nature as a mentor, she also has a sly and playful side, as shown when she humorously auctions off the human protagonist Takeru to the other Eto-shin. She refers to herself using the traditional and somewhat elderly pronoun "washi," which adds to her image as one of the older and wiser members of the group. One of her personal quirks is that she dislikes eating any food that is warmer than room temperature.
Doratan’s primary motivation is to support the growth and success of Nyaa-tan, the Cat Eto-shin who aspires to become a full-fledged Zodiac God. She takes her role as a mentor seriously, believing that Nyaa-tan has a strong chance of achieving her goal. Her actions throughout the story are largely driven by this desire to guide and protect her pupil.
Within the story, Doratan serves as a mentor and ally to the main characters. She is one of Nyaa-tan’s three teachers, specifically tasked with training her in mental strength and the spiritual energy known as Sol/Lull. Her initial appearance is dramatic and deceptive; she seemingly destroys the home of the human Takeru and engages Nyaa-tan in a one-sided duel, playing the role of a betrayer. This is later revealed to be an elaborate act orchestrated to make Nyaa-tan appear as a tragic heroine to win Takeru’s sympathy, demonstrating Doratan's cunning nature. She subsequently uses her powers to rebuild the house and explains the situation to the other zodiacs.
Doratan shares a strong and supportive bond with Shima-tan, another zodiac deity. The two are frequently seen together, and they collaborate to aid and further Nyaa-tan's training. While initially wary of the human Takeru due to her disruptive introduction, Doratan grows to respect him, finding him to be an "interesting human". She is instrumental in revealing Takeru's rare ability to generate Sol/Lull energy to the other Zodiac Gods. Her relationship with Nyaa-tan is central to her role; as a mentor, she is dedicated to her pupil's success and provides for her basic needs, such as using her Sol/Lull to create a house for Nyaa-tan on Takeru's property.
While Doratan does not undergo a significant personality shift, her development is shown through her deepening commitment to the people around her. Her actions, from the deceptive initial test to the genuine concern she shows for Nyaa-tan's safety against dangerous enemies like Chu-tan, reveal a character whose playful antics mask a profound and caring dedication to her role as a mentor and guardian. Her development is less about personal change and more about the revelation of her sincere investment in the wellbeing of her student and friends.
As a high-ranking Eto-shin, Doratan possesses formidable and versatile abilities centered on the manipulation of Sol/Lull, a spiritual energy connected to human emotions. She is known as the Master of Spiritual Power and is said to display the most divine power among the Eto gods, with abilities focused on emitting a powerful dragon aura. Her skills allow her to both destroy and create with precision. She demonstrates the power to generate a house and other functional constructs out of nothing, as well as the ability to instantly demolish and rebuild structures repeatedly. This precise control and immense output mark her as an exceptionally powerful figure among the Zodiacs.
