Description
Narumi Inoue is a classmate and friend of the protagonist Hibiki Amami at Hanazuka Prefectural High School. She serves as the class representative and is initially hostile toward anything related to the occult, openly expressing her hatred for ghosts and supernatural phenomena. Her fear of the paranormal is genuine and often leaves her startled or distressed when Hibiki’s spirit companions appear. Despite this, she remains part of the friend group and gradually becomes more involved in Hibiki’s unusual life.

Narumi’s personality is a blend of sternness and hidden warmth. She comes across as responsible, level-headed, and somewhat strict, but she also shows a softer side that she is reluctant to admit. Her classmates often refer to her as a “tsundere” because she clearly cares for Hibiki and the others yet denies her feelings, responding with annoyance or bluster when called out. She is particularly close to her late grandmother, whose spirit occasionally lingers nearby, and is known as a “granny’s girl”; this familial bond is one of the few supernatural connections she accepts, and her grandmother’s ghost even helps her cook a meaningful meal for her younger cousin Yuki.

Her motivations are rooted in a desire to keep her normal life and avoid the frightening unknown, but she is also driven by a sense of duty and loyalty. She worries about her friends and reluctantly goes along with their ghost-related activities, often acting as the voice of reason or the one who points out the absurdity of a situation. Over the course of the series, Narumi slowly grows more accustomed to the spirits, though her fear never fully disappears. Her development is subtle: she learns to trust Hibiki’s judgment, participates in group efforts to help spirits move on, and occasionally acknowledges the positive side of Hibiki’s abilities.

Aside from her role as the skeptic within the group, Narumi is a capable cook and takes her responsibilities seriously, whether in school or at home. She does not possess any supernatural abilities herself; her significance lies in her emotional arc and her interactions with the living and dead characters around her. Her relationship with Hibiki is central: she is often exasperated by Hibiki’s antics but consistently steps up when Hibiki or others need support, even when it means facing her own fears.
