Description
Kasumi Takamiya is a character from the anime Witch Craft Works, known primarily as the younger sister of the protagonist, Honoka Takamiya. She is the daughter of Komachi Takamiya and is a student at the Tougetsu Academy girls middle school branch.
Kasumi is a young girl with a petite stature, noticeably shorter than her older brother. She has wavy, shoulder-length dark pink hair that she often keeps out of her face with a hairband, and her eyes are an aubergine or eggplant color. When not in casual clothes at home, she wears the standard Tougetsu girls uniform, which consists of a white blouse with a blue tie, a green vest, and a green skirt.
The most defining and prominent aspect of Kasumi's personality is her extreme, and what some might describe as an acute, brother complex towards Honoka. Her attachment is so intense that her own mother claims she will jump into Honoka's bed or step into the bath with him every other day, which Kasumi defends as her innate right as a little sister. She becomes intensely jealous whenever her brother gives attention to anyone else, most especially the powerful witch Ayaka Kagari. In her mind, she has already decided to marry Honoka and that they will build a happy home together, even going so far as to specify that they will be blessed with three children, treating it as a settled matter.
Despite this behavior, Kasumi vehemently denies having a brother complex when accused, comically stuttering that she does not love her brother "that way," even as she outlines their future marriage. This contradiction is a source of much of the character's humor. Her actions are often impulsive and driven by her possessiveness, leading her to constantly try and pry Honoka away from Ayaka's presence.
Kasumi's primary motivation is the protection of her older brother, Honoka. This goal is so central to her identity that she joined the Workshop specifically for the sole reason of safeguarding him. Her dedication to this mission is absolute, and she has stated openly that she does not particularly care which side she is on in the larger magical conflict; her only real concern is ensuring her brother's safety.
In the story, Kasumi acts as both a source of comic relief and an additional layer of conflict for the main characters. Her constant, and mostly unsuccessful, attempts to thwart Ayaka create many of the series' humorous moments. In the original video animation episode, Kasumi takes on a more central role as she orchestrates an assault on Ayaka while her powers are diminished, forming an alliance to try and "win back" her brother from her perceived rival. Despite her best efforts, her schemes invariably fail, often spectacularly, against Ayaka's superior strength.
Her key relationships are almost entirely defined by her family and her rival. Her relationship with her mother, Komachi, is one of mutual affection, though Kasumi is occasionally verbally mistreats her. Her bond with Honoka is the emotional core of her character, representing a fiercely protective yet highly possessive and comically inappropriate sibling love. Conversely, her dynamic with Ayaka Kagari is one of pure antagonism and jealousy, as she sees the powerful witch as a direct enemy who is trying to steal her brother away from her. Despite her fervent opposition, Ayaka largely treats Kasumi's attacks as a minor nuisance.
In terms of character development, while Kasumi's brother complex remains a persistent trait, she begins to mature and find a more cooperative role. She learns to respect her brother's decisions and, over time, starts to see Ayaka less as a pure rival and more as an ally in the common goal of protecting Honoka, even if their relationship remains tense and competitive.
Kasumi is a Workshop Witch, and her notable abilities are as unique as her personality. She possesses the power to animate and control plush toys, specifically transforming cute little plushies, such as charm points from her favorite games, into gigantic combat mechs. Her most notable familiar is a giant teddy bear she can command in battle. Her power is considerable enough that she was able to grow her teddy bear to such an enormous size that its head reached the stratosphere in order to crush an opponent.
